[That's a surprise, but it's not an offer he turns down. He takes her hand, giving it a quick squeeze.]

Watson is gonna get himself into trouble with somebody, someday, saying things like that.

[Alfie might not take him up on his offer to take his anger out on him, but someone else might.]

[plundering]

Trust me, I know. I'll talk to him.

[So they're holding hands now, which is... whatever. She's not going to think too hard on it.]

He cares too much. He doesn't get that you can't be like that in a place like this.

[devoutish]

He'lll even care about people that he does not like.

[Which Alfie kind of gets, in a weird way. He's definitely less extreme about it than Watson, and he has a different sort of mindset and reasoning about it, but he's worked with and defended people he dislikes before. He's also screwed over and worked against people that he does like on a personal level. It's not exactly the same as what Watson does, but he can see the parallels, and understand why Watson might do what he does.]

[plundering]

Yeah, but someone's going to take advantage of that one day.

[devoutish]

Yeah. Yeah - you know, as much as he fucking frustrates me, I've come to genuinely like the man.

[They're not friends, and Alfie has no doubt that they'll be at odds sometimes - maybe more often than they're on the same side. But that's just business.]

[plundering]

He grows on you, huh?

[She grins.]

I owe him a lot.

[devoutish]

A bit.

[He idly strokes a thumb along the back of her hand.]

I do, too. Yeah. After I died, I might've died again, if he hadn't come.

[And Watson had done it in a way that hadn't rankled Alfie, or made him feel like he was being looked down on or saved.]

[plundering]

He was practically started a food drive for you.

[devoutish]

Warm clothing, as well.

[Still no regrets for that scalpel threat, though. That had been entirely unrelated.]

I KNEW WHAT YOU MEANT

He is a far bigger one than me.

[Never you mind that he's still stroking your hand in slow, light circles, Fiona.]

[plundering]

[Uh-huh. She's just going to glance down at their hands pointedly.]

Yeah?

[devoutish]

[And he looks at her pointedly.]

Absolutely, yeah.

[What, Fiona. What.]

[plundering]

Uh-huh. Very convincing. You've completely changed my mind.

[devoutish]

[Completely straight-faced, he tips his hat at her. Which is actually her hat, because he's still wearing it.]

[plundering]

Charmer. You're not going to keep that.

[devoutish]

All right.

[He sweeps it off and sets it on her head, adjusting it to the angle she usually wears it at.]

[plundering]

I thought you liked me better in your hat.

[devoutish]

[It's a joke, but also kind of not. She does look really good in the black.]

Well, if you insist.

[He's too tense to properly smile or laugh, but his eyes are maybe a little lighter as he hands her his hat again. She's not keeping it either, but they can pretend.]

[plundering]

[She takes the hat, but just sets it in her lap for now.]

Where are you headed when lockdown ends?

[devoutish]

East. Gonna see to Kesara; bring her some food. Might go west again after that, to gather supplies now that the digging's done.

[plundering]

I can follow you part of the way. Meet back up with John and then head back to Rhys.

[If that's cool.]

[devoutish]

Yeah. Tell Rhys hello for me.

I'll drop by for a visit, if we're in the same area again.

[He assumes they will be at some point. It's not that big of a town.]

[plundering]

Rhys would like to see you.

[And she would, too. But she doesn't need to say that.]

He's a good lad. I'll see about coming by soon.

[He does genuinely like Rhys, and Angel as well - and yes, he would absolutely like to spend more time with Fiona.]
