What sort of things does he talk about, in his comedy routines? Jewish things, or gentile things?

Lots of different things. Both, I think? He does a lot of movies, political satire sometimes. He's got a movie called "Blazing Saddles." Takes aim at racism in America by having a black bloke end up getting assigned as sheriff to a small town out in the west. And "The Producers" is about a pair of blokes who try to make a flop musical and end up making a hit because everyone thinks it's so bad, it must be making fun of the Third Reich and Hitler and all of the people responsible for what happened during World War II. And all of that on a meta level is aimed legitimately at making the Nazi's look as idiotic as humanly possible.

Mm.

[He goes quiet again - not because he's offended by the mention of the Holocaust this time, but because now he's thinking about it, and heading back to those dark thoughts.]

My favorite movie from him is "Robin Hood, Men in Tights." D'you like the Robin Hood stories?

[He doesn't respond at first. Finally, though, John gets:]

[You're worrying him again, Alfie.]

Might be your kind of man. Robbed from the rich, but instead of stopping there, he took it the next step and passed on what he had to the poor. This is a funny take on that. Poking gentle fun at the legends.

There were books; I read a couple when I was a kid. Didn't grow up hearing the legends, though.

The books are good enough here. Robin's meant to be the best archer ever, so there are more than a few jokes about that. It's got some raunchy humor, too, and makes fun of some of the traditional film elements. Like there's this romantic song that Robin sings to Maid Marian, except we see his band of merry men--his gang-- watching Robin and Marian where they're hidden behind a hung-up bed sheet. It's night in the wood and they've got a fire going, so it looks like sort of shadow puppet theatre. And when Robin gets to the final note of the song, he moves so that his sword sheath shifts and it looks like there's something... rising for his virgin maid.

[Alfie imagines he's supposed to laugh here. He imagines that on another night, he probably would. But tonight, right now, he can't manage it.]

What's your favorite film, then, in the future?

"Goldfinger," hands down. It's a spy film about this bloke named James Bond. It's a whole series of films with him as the central character. He goes by the code name 0-0-7--Double-0-7. He's suave, cool, can figure out how to solve any problem and looks good doing it. Always gets the girl, too.

I've been watching the films and reading the books they're based on since I was a kid. I always dreamed of going along as his partner on one of his missions.

James Bond. No, we don't have him.

We do have Sherlock Holmes. For a month, I thought you were using an alias.

He comes a bit later in the timeline. [There's a pause.]

And Captain Rogers told me he knew about stories with a Dr. Watson and Sherlock Holmes the first day I got here. [He licks his lips.] Did you read the stories much?

[devoutish]

I remember the first one came out when I was nine or ten. Then there was another one; something about India.

[jumpthegun]

[Well, thank god Alfie wasn't an avid reader. John is already feeling awkward in this conversation. He'd normally ask Alfie to just move along from it, but these are special circumstances. It's the doctor's turn for something noncommittal, though.]

That so? Hmm.

[devoutish]

[There's a nasty little sense of satisfaction in that. He almost picks a little more - ever been to India, Dr. Watson? - but instead he lets out a sighing groan, leans back against the arm of the couch, and closes his eyes.]

Another question, or another fact.

Alfred. How did your parents choose your name? [It's the first thing that comes into John's head.]

[devoutish]

I was named for my father's grandfather. He was an Albert.

[jumpthegun]

[John tries to follow that.]

But then... shouldn't you be Albert?

[devoutish]

Nah. We pick a name that sounds close enough that you remember the original, but isn't the same. Albert, Alfred.

[jumpthegun]

What was your father's name, then? Just sort of a family tradition for the eldest boy?

[devoutish]

My father is Abraham. Named for an Avrum somewhere; I don't remember the relation. But they're the same name, really - Abraham, Avrum. That's about as close as we get to directly naming one person after another.

[jumpthegun]

Huh... [That really is interesting.]

My dad's name is Jonathan, and his dad before him up the line, as far as I know. I lucked out with just John. Think he wanted to honor the naming scheme without having it be exactly the same.

[devoutish]

You're sure your dad isn't Jewish?

[Look, it's a real, live joke! It's barely one, because he says it in the same tired tone as he's saying everything else, but still.]

[John's lips quirk up for just a moment.]

Could be. Any other signs I should be considering from the days of my youth?

[devoutish]
