I didn't like her when she was on the drink. She's not a very nice person when she is, makes bad decisions, hurts the people she cares about, lashes out.

She used to go out binge drinking every night when we were teenagers. Started pulling apart when that kept up.

[John shrugs.]

So, that's the way it is. Guess not really being close to the rest of the family rules us out as Jewish, too.

Here and there, yeah. I've got a second cousin who was a tax collector.

Heaven forbid. [John raises a brow.] That's still sort of in line with the family business, though, it's it? He's just collecting money from people legally.

Legally. Fucking shaming the family, he is.

[But his tone is lighthearted; he doesn't really believe that.]

And did this tax collector try to get you to cough up your fair share?

I'll have you know I pay my taxes.

[Alfie just smiles.]

[John rolls his eye, but there's a little smirk on his own lips. If things could just stay like this between them, that would be for the best. Sharing a quiet joke, ribbing each other about things that don't really matter much in the grand scheme of things here. That's how he wants it to be with Alfie. The other man is easy enough to talk to when they aren't fighting. One of the easiest, in fact.]

You're incorrigible. I didn't report it sometimes on my taxes when the clients paid us in cash. [He's a felony, Alfie. A murdering felon.]

Thanks for making me eat, Alfie.

[He's handing back the Cheez-its, though, because Cheez-its are disgusting.]

Yeah. Finish off the apple before bed.

Yes, sir. [John elbows Alfie lightly in the arm, but finishes the apple off in a few bites. He stands after that, and while he's still tired and things are still awful, they aren't quite as bad as they were.]

[John shuffles off back to his corner, wrapping his own and Alfie's blanket around himself tightly and propping himself up on his pack. John lets his eyes slide closed, trusting the other man, even when he really probably shouldn't.]
