Obviously not. Don't think I didn't hear you say to Solomons that you'd be taking Emily and leaving if we cornered House again, Tifa. The walls have ears.

[ He looks away, voice a little rougher. ] It doesn't matter what she wants. She'll need to learn that people will leave her regardless, someday. Might as well be now.

[By contrast, Tifa's voice gets a little softer.]

[ He doesn't answer her, looking at the wall instead. His fingers tap against the counter to the last few bars of the song that's been playing all night. ]

[She studies him for a moment, then sighs.]

You know she's already learned that lesson. Do you really want to add to it?

That lesson is not a one time deal.

Don't you want to try to protect her from it so that she doesn't go through what we have?

No. If not us, someone else will. There's no reason to protect her from it.

[ He looks at her, annoyed. ] Why is that always your response?

Because whenever you make your mind up, there's nothing I can say that makes a difference.

[Tifa kicks at the base of the cabinet absently, staring down at the tiles.]

Do you really want to leave?

[bywolves]

Does that make a difference?

[She studies him for a long moment, not sure how to take that.]

For good. [ It's easier that way. He shouldn't have let this get as bad as it has. His stomach sinks further even as he's saying it, his eyes and throat burning, but he doesn't look away. ]

[Tifa's the one who finally looks away, her gaze dropping to her boots. This is hard for her to navigate, because even when the members of AVALANCHE got into huge arguments, this is never the road they went down. She thinks he must be lying, but there's a small, insecure part of her that wonders if that's just wishful thinking.]
