Because whenever you make your mind up, there's nothing I can say that makes a difference.

That doesn't mean I'm not listening to you. I'm just not doing exactly what you say.

[Tifa kicks at the base of the cabinet absently, staring down at the tiles.]

Do you really want to leave?

Does that make a difference?

Of course it does. Why wouldn't it?

It usually doesn't.

I do want to leave. [ He'll just lie through his teeth, then. ]

[She studies him for a long moment, not sure how to take that.]

Just for a while, or for good?

For good. [ It's easier that way. He shouldn't have let this get as bad as it has. His stomach sinks further even as he's saying it, his eyes and throat burning, but he doesn't look away. ]

[Tifa's the one who finally looks away, her gaze dropping to her boots. This is hard for her to navigate, because even when the members of AVALANCHE got into huge arguments, this is never the road they went down. She thinks he must be lying, but there's a small, insecure part of her that wonders if that's just wishful thinking.]

Are you sure?

[ Good. Good, he - wins. Not that he wanted to win this. He looks away. ]

Yes. [ His tone is clipped, now. ]

You don't have to leave because I'm angry with you, or because Emily is scared. We can fix it.

No. This has been a problem from the start. It's never going to stop being a problem. [ His voice is tense, just - slightly upset. ] You don't like how I do things, and you refuse to leave, so it falls to me to actually solve the damn issue.

[Ouch.]

That's not fair, Royce. We've been talking about it, haven't we? And it isn't like I disagree with every decision you make. You're better at a lot of things than I am.

That doesn't solve the problem.

So we can sit down and talk tomorrow night. All of us. That's fair, right?

... Fine. [ He sinks down further into his hood. He can't go anywhere tonight anyway. ]

[Somehow, she doesn't think this has solved anything, because Royce is stubborn. Tifa sighs, then steps forward to hug him impulsively.]

I still love you, Royce, even when I'm upset with you.

[ The hug catches him off guard. The - admission, too, he knows what she means, but people don't - people don't. If he were a cat, the hug would've made him yowl and rocket off up into the ceiling, but.

Touch that he's not expecting ramps up the fright already stale and heavy in his chest, and he only just stops himself from shoving. His breath catches instead, and he completely freezes. ]

Don't. [ He manages, sharply. He sounds more stressed than he does angry. ]

[Well, that was a mistake. Tifa pulls back slowly, crossing her arms.]

Sorry. [She says it softly, biting her lip for a second.] I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable. I just... I want to make sure you know.

Go away. [ Fuck, he almost feels like he's about to cry, what is this. It's not all coming from him, he's realized, he doesn't feel things this way. Manufactured sad, manufactured fright, dumped on top of the rest of what he feels, which was intense to begin with. His breath shudders again. That stressed note is still very present in his voice. ] Leave me alone.

[He sounds stressed, not angry, so it doesn't hurt her as much as it would otherwise. It's a good thing she has her arms crossed, too, because her first instinct is to reach for him again, to touch his hand or his arm or something.]

Don't leave until we have a chance to talk. Please?
