There have been things that have made it more bearable. I wouldn't call them upsides.

[There are so many things she could ask, if it wasn't so early in her time in Norfinbury, if they hadn't just met. She's thoroughly intrigued by Alfie, but she has no interest on pushing things.]

Something as simple as a good pair of gloves would make things more bearable for me already.

[To say she's worried about frostbite is an understatement. She needs her hands.]

Gloves. Food. Blankets, people. Singing old songs from home on the network. There are things.

[But none of them make up for what he left behind - not even the people.]

You sing? [She raises an eyebrow.] I'm a terrible singer. But there is comfort in even the smallest things.

I can sing. I don't do it habitually.

[Smiling, Claire tilts her head, leaning closer to the camera for just a moment.]

Maybe one day I'll get to hear you.

[He's trying to sound serious, but there is maaaaaybe a hint of a smile in his voice.]

[She lets out a throaty chuckle.]

I very solemnly promise I won't record it.

It's already recorded. Back a bit - a month or so.

[She's totally hunting for that.]

And you don't mind? Is that not putting a dent in your reputation? You must have one.

[He probably doesn't care. Probably confident enough not to.]

[He snorts.]

If a reputation is so flimsy that a bit of singing can ruin it, it's not much of a reputation at all.

[And then he links her this, casually skipping past the dirtier one he'd sung earlier in the post. His voice is very average - in tune, but that's about it.]

[He's quite right, there. She doesn't respond right away, listening to his singing first, an amused smile on her face. At least, he's not trying to break her eardrums, and that's something compared to the singing she hears most often at work (drunken, off-key, vile).]

I'm sure that old sergeant deserved it, huh?

I did one about Norfinbury, if you look a bit farther down.

[He sounds a little subdued, because he'd looked a bit father down himself - down to the point where he and Watson had started singing some really sad songs about the dead.]

[She's smiling, going through the post and listening to old drinking songs and slightly tweaked versions of songs she's never heard before.

She's not the best singer, but she's in the same mind as Alfie, especially right now, on a private post. She feels like she owes him that much - whether or not he agrees, doesn't matter.

She grins, before starting to sing, voice low.]

[He's barely familiar with the language, and probably would have guessed Italian if he didn't know her history.]

What does it translate to?

It's a sad song; a tragedy.

[She goes through a rough translation in her head.] It is the story of a love, as there has been no equal. That made me understand, all the good all the bad, that lit up my life, turning it off afterwards.

It's one of my mother's favorites. First thing that came to my mind.

Mm. I only know Russian lullabies.

[She smiles softly.]

I know many lullabies - they come in handy sometimes in the hospital. It's a terrifying place for kids.

[Not that she, personally has any.]

You have children?

I don't. No. Got a gaggle of nieces and nephews, though; yeah.

You want 'em?

[She does, at some point. Maybe when her life is not so insane. Maybe when she's better at picking who she dates.

She has no delusion that she's nowhere close to that.]

I'd need a wife first. Better not to get ahead of myself.

Ah! [The noise is amused, although surprised.] I'll admit, I thought you'd be a married man already. Don't ask me why, I have no idea. Might be the calm confidence thing.

[For all she knows, he's terribly ugly and that's why he hasn't found someone to settle with. The thought makes her chuckle.]

[That'd be his guess.]

Most men, they're settled down by their forties.

I wouldn't have guessed you were in your forties by your voice only, Mr. Solomons.

[Funny how some things don't change.]

Expectations are still the same in my world. Every time I speak to my mom, she asks me when I'm getting married, and I'm only in my thirties.

Unmarried women in their thirties aren't very common where I'm from - if you don't mind my saying so. Mind, you they aren't unheard of.
