[He didn't even know what to do with this thing at first, and, being so cold, he only gave its screen a cursory examination before looking for something to more adequately clothe himself with. He spent a while calling out for the Archangels, particularly Lucifel, and for someone named Ishtar as he searched, but as the day wore on, he found himself simply calling out for anyone.

He had spent hundreds of years in the company of someone else. He had never been truly alone in his life, and it was stifling, more chilling than the environment he stepped gingerly through, his sandals useless to him in the snow. He didn't stay out long, returning to the house he started out in and nursing feeling back into his feet as he examined the device he'd woken up with, finding the assistant quickly and from there, everything else followed.

Except nothing had ever prepared him for something like this, and like many others, he had no idea how to properly parse this.]

Voice Message from Enoch

Who wrote this? Where have you taken me and what have you done with my friends!?

[A pause, the only audible sound is his breath. He sounds as if he's been exerting himself. And he sounds cold, but that goes without saying.]

It said there are others here. Are there others...? [The aggression from before has been dropped, in favor of a hopeful tone. He misses hearing friendly voices already.]

[She, too, isn't happy about being taken from where she was supposed to be, but for the moment she's trying to figure out where this place is so she can then work on a way out. So when she hears his message, she can't help but to reach out. She has an English accent, upper middle cast, and she speaks with perfect diction.]

Yes, there are. Well, at least there is myself and a few others that I know of. I take it you have not run into anyone since waking here?

No, not a soul.

[His own enunciation is clear and his voice has an innate gentleness to it, a sort of soft, breathy timbre, breathier in his fatigue. And here is a voice clip to cover the fact that the player is bad at describing voices. The fact that he is not a native speaker by any means is masked by the fact that Norfinbury takes care of that, though at this point how is anyone to tell, least of all Enoch himself? English didn't exist when he learned to talk. In fact, there was only one language, then, so he's even less likely to stop and think about the sounds that are actually coming out of his mouth.]

I suppose I should have examined this...device more closely before. I was beginning to worry I was alone here.

I do wonder just how large this place is that we barely have any contact with anyone other than with this.

[It was definitely good to hear another voice. Of course, it didn't do much to help the feeling of isolation. Or convince that there actually were other people here. Considering her past of having been trapped in her own mind for over a century, she wasn't that good at discerning disembodied voices being real or imaginary.]

I was having the same worry, though at least we are not completely alone. I am still learning modern technology, but I believe this device is called a tablet. Typically used for ease of communication over distances. It makes me wonder why we were given these in the first place.

[There was more than a little note of curiosity to her voice as she was considering that angle.]

A "tablet"...such a simple name for a complex little device. I would have guessed it to be a large phone. I'm not familiar with these things, either, save what my friend has told me of the future.

[A pause, as he thinks on the woman in the pictures in the album he found. What she's wearing, where she is...]

Or I suppose, the present day. But...how alone can we be, if someone gave us these? Unless every household had one all along...

[The thought of these devices waiting for new owners was unsettling...and kind of sad.]

Agreed. Though in a way it is much like a large phone given one is able to still talk to people through it. Though I believe the more accurate description is that it is a far more portable computer.

[It is a curious device. She'd had an iPad back home as it came in handy for doing things on the run or needing quick references for something. This tablet isn't all that different from it.]

That is rather the question. I believe someone gave us these tablets as opposed to them having simply been sitting here for us to find. Though as for who that someone is, I suppose it is anyone's estimation there.

[The fact that someone had brought them here and left tablets with them without any trace was disconcerting. It was something Helena didn't like not knowing, so it was certainly something she wished to try and figure out.]

[He doesn't know what a "computer" is, either...that's one of the things Lucifel mentioned but never elaborated on. At least he's heard the term before, so he mentally files that away for later as he looks over his tablet (creating some soft brushing sounds on the feed) for any sort of distinguishing markings. His jeans had a maker's label, and so did Lucifel's. He never got the opportunity to examine his friend's phone, or many other articles from the future, but if clothes should have such labels it's worth a look.]

Perhaps there is a clue on the tablet itself, somewhere we haven't thought to look...

It is possible. I have tried searching through the tablet as much as possible, though it seems either things are locked from my access, or they simply do not exist.

[She gave a slightly frustrated sigh as she looked her tablet over again.]

This is where I wish Claudia were here. She understands technology better than I, and she could no doubt get into areas on the tablet we cannot.

I see no markings on the tablet itself, either, other than this strange string of numbers. I wonder what it means.

[He has no clue what serial numbers are for. Why would he, after all, when mass production wasn't even a glint in an inventor's eye?]
indelibleink: (052 - Looking and watching)

Voice

[personal profile] indelibleink 2015-06-09 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, those would be the serial numbers. It's how manufacturers keep track of a product upon completion of being assembled and then distributed to retailers that then sell them.

[She looks at the numbers on hers curiously for some moments.]

It can also be used for finding the origin point of the product. Namely whomever left the tablets for us in the first place.

[For a moment, he's completely silent, stunned as it sinks in.]

Could it be that easy?

[He has no idea how to trace this back to its origins, but maybe she does...it's odd for a problem of his to have such a simple solution after chasing fragments of rumors for centuries but he's hopeful.]

Experience tells me nothing is ever that easy, but things are always worth a try, are they not?

[She looks back at the apps on the tablet.]

I simply need to determine if there is internet here that will allow me to try and track the serial number. This would be much simpler if my computer genius friend were here. She'd have the answer for us in a jiffy.

[The knowledge he had of modern things was...patchwork, at best. The mixed blessing of having a time-traveling friend who would talk to him about some things without any context whatsoever.]

I'm currently in a house, medium-sized and lacking any storage rooms, and to the north of me is a massive snowbank that has swallowed up a good deal of other buildings. I haven't seen any other significant landmarks, I'm sorry.

[He pauses. There's a raspy sound like he may be rubbing the side of his face.]

[Yeah, that's not helpful at all. He sighs, trying not to sound too exasperated. He thinks he realizes how this is different from conversing with the Archangels. At least, with them, they were there, just in the air somewhere. He knew there were swans that weren't really swans flying above him somewhere.

This? Well...]

The only way we can be sure we're both in the same place in the world is that we've both been welcomed to this "Norfinbury"...and I'm afraid I've never heard of it, either. Then again, the cities I'm familiar with are...likely very different, and fewer.

[He has definitely never heard of a place like this beyond distant places in Russia sometimes mentioned in the pulps.]

So this snow bank you lookin' at. You think you could get on top of it? See around ya? It might help you figure out more about where you are.

[He's about to respond that he's never heard of any of those; it's likely they're from entirely different continents, as he knows of their existence and a few names of broad locations like major lakes and such, but has never been there.

But the suggestion distracts him from it. He can't blame George, after all, he himself was from a desert, with little more variety in his travel than the brief moments of passing through more temperate climates. He didn't make a habit of traveling far enough north to see so much snow during the day.]

I'm afraid it's more than five times my height. I couldn't even begin to scale it. [There's a little sound that might have been a suppressed chuckle.] I'd never seen one so large before coming here, either. It's amazing how it's managed to pile so high without falling over.

[...Maybe he shouldn't stay in this house very long. What if it does fall?]

It's likely you know more about it than I. I've only heard brief mentions of places much farther north than I've been.

[He gets up and heads to the door, intending to show George the wall. He can be heard asking the tablet's assistant how to use the cameras (he knows to call them "cameras"), and then there's the sound of a door opening. And then there's a video feed, looking out at the snow - there's a looming fifty-foot wall of it, as promised. He's not so close to it as to be at its foot, but he's definitely close enough to see it.]

Perhaps a "snow mountain" would be a more appropriate description.

It is baffling, isn't it? How large must this place be for us to be so far apart?

[It's a little scary, admittedly. There's the sound of him crossing the room, footsteps on the floor, and a piece of furniture under a body's weight. He lets out a sigh, shaky and tired.]

I'm not sure what to make of any of this. I've never been anywhere like this at all...the worst is, I wasn't alone. How could they take me here without my friends noticing? Or without waking me?

Well, one of my friends...he would be here by now.

[There's no easy way to say the person in question can teleport. And failing that, scale any surface because he doesn't need to obey the laws of gravity. How do you explain your best friend being an archangel?

You don't, that's how. People will think you're crazy, he'd known that all along. He's only really ever said anything about the more unusual aspects of his life to people who seemed similarly strange - that "HGWELLS" person who had responded to him, for example, clearly displaced in time, herself, and used to it.]

It's hard to explain, but he can get anywhere he needs to be.
