[As usual, Stephen doesn't show his face on the network. He sounds tired, but that isn't new, either.]

Good evening, Norfinbury.

As most of you will recall, two months ago we were able to contact the...remnants of the former residents of Norfinbury and of the people subjected to former sessions. We discovered that they had become a kind of digital hive mind; they were interested in helping us, though they were limited in the ways in which they could interact with us. Since then, particularly since we located Andromeda's body, the town has been going quiet--you may have noticed the feeling of emptiness in many of the houses, particularly those that formerly may have seemed to be haunted.

I propose that we attempt contact again. It's possible that the data ghosts are...dead...but if there's still some remnant of them residing in the recesses of the network I'd like to re-establish that contact, ask their advice, ask whether they have any additional assistance they can offer us at this time...and ask whether they have any final wishes we can still carry out on their behalf.

The seance will take place in three nights' time, on the evening of day three hundred and ninety-five. I have...some experience in spiritual matters, and can provide guidance for anyone who is unsure how to open themselves to that form of communication. Those who volunteer should be aware that the process was...unpleasant for some of us. You may have an out of body experience or undergo an upsetting vision. Those who participated before can share more details if you are concerned, but as far as I'm aware no one was injured in the last attempt.

It doesn't matter. It probably wasn't important. And I don't remember it being that bad, at least not for me.

Interesting question, whether I can be made to remember something differently.

[ Gabriel freezes, only his eyes moving to take in Stephen's features. ]

I mean, interesting, yes. But do you want to really check on that? I don't want to cause you more problems than you're already going to run into.

[The look Stephen gives Gabriel in return is one of dark contemplation. He could forget getting David killed. He could forget American torturing him. All he'd have to do would be to ask Gabriel to tell him it never happened and it would probably work.

He's not so far gone, though, that the idea doesn't fill him with a sense of dread. If he starts giving up his memories, what does he have left? Who is he at that point if he's not strong enough to be the sum of his experiences?]

Of course not. We don't know if it would revert afterward. It should, if patterns hold, but we don't know.

[There's a different kind of calculation in his eyes now, one with a hint of fear. Unfounded and unfair since he's the one who brought it up, but there all the same.]

I do trust you, Gabriel.

[ Gabriel watches him carefully for a moment. This was bound to happen eventually, unfortunately- if Gabriel had this death price, he'd be veering from gullible to hatefully contrary every few minutes.

But he's glad that Stephen doesn't want to try changing his memories. That's a delicate situation that Gabriel doesn't want to mess up. ]

I know. I'm trying my best, but I am messing up sometimes, on little things. Hopefully, it won't mean much when this is all over.

I think I hate this more than the anterograde amnesia. At least then I probably kept forgetting to be upset about it.
