I'm sorry, to both of you. I wanted to reach out, but I felt I could only make things worse in the process, because of situations that felt more similar than they likely are.

It was nothing but half-founded fear and I should not have listened to that fear.

[ For a second, there's relief.

It's quickly replaced by the beginnings of cold fury crystallising at the edges of her brain. She can feel it in there, glass-like and ready to fracture. ]

What happened?

[ Except as she asks the question she knows what happened. She remembers. The amnesiac barrier in her mind shatters and she's in the bunker and he's on the ground and her arm doesn't work and she's kicking the glass deeper into his side and there's so much blood, and that's why nobody told her what happened, it's because it was her fault and Rhys was never going to survive it and--

But John's dead too.

And why wouldn't they tell her Rhys died, when everyone but Rhys himself seemed to be in favour of telling her about what really happened, whether she'd blame herself or not? ]

[ The order of those is important, since it indirectly asks the third question. Why was she left to find out via the obituaries?? RUDE?? ]

Two nights ago.

Rhys was deteriorating and suffering. He asked for mercy. John tried to stop me. We fought. I snapped.

I was going to find you.

[Just stick to the facts.]

[ Because yeah, no, she's not going to get mad about a mercy-killing. She'd be the ultimate hypocrite. And she's seen Beckett snap before, hasn't she, and she can easily imagine (excuses for) why that would be an acceptable reaction.

Not so much letting her wait this long. Two nights? ]

[They should have pushed. They didn't. Hoping maybe for Rhys to come back. For either of them to come back. For some of this to be undone.]

[They had enough vampire talk at this point for Flynn to not just-- revert to yelling at this point. But it kind of stops there. Because this is John and Flynn is trying, really, but that's all the control he can muster up right now.]

[It's happening. He hadn't spent the first night sleeping at all, working to clean the blood from the scene so people who would stop there later would have to deal with less of it. The next two were riddled with nightmares of their dead bodies coming to life to drag Beckett into the snow to die while he watched helplessly, his body too frail to hold its own weight to save him. The Prazosin (he only has six left now...) could only reduce it to a confused sense of abstract danger with only a muddy impression, protect Beckett. And now there is possibly danger, and the impression from his dreams drags itself into reality.

His breath coming out shaky, scared, knowing this is territory where his actions might backfire horribly again, he looks up at his companion. He has been mostly sleepless for two nights, but not the weeks that confused his judgment before.]

Beckett, can I- do I have your permission to describe my impression of what the Beast is in your defense? Would you have me defend you at all?

[Beckett looks up from the tablet at him for a long mute moment. He feels oddly cold - not just in the physical sense, but a feeling of strange stillness all over him, grim inevitability. He knows this song and dance. He's had less and more destructive slips in Norfinbury before, and his more normal response had been a self-directed rage, because control matters. But this feels different. Maybe because everything has felt different, since they've gotten to the bunker, and he'd begun to seriously think about what came next. What was after the end.

It's a pretty ugly answer: after the end is only himself, same as it ever was.

At last, he shakes his head.]

This shouldn't be defended. They're all right to be angry, and I owe them the truth.

Not this, but you. Saying that you "snapped" makes it sound as if you were more self-aware than you were, to those who don't know your kind.

[Peter is calling him evil, after all. Absolutes like that are how humans tend to justify hurting each other.]

But... [He shifts closer to lay a hand on his shoulder.] I understand, if the answer to even that is no. I'll support you instead.

[He seems to actually have success in that department, anyway. Rarely has support proven to do harm to either of them. Fewer footholds for his depression to find here.]
