Sure. Sure, if I accept all this at face value, assume it's all real. A lot of shit has happened in the last two days that didn't feel real, though.

'Fraid that feeling's not gonna let up any time soon. I know this doesn't much help to hear, but these things that you are experiencing are going to feel real enough that you're gonna have to deal with them like they're real. The alternative is sitting still. And that won't stop you getting pulled in.

[motherserpent]

I don't --

I'm not one to sit still.

[That doesn't stop her from feeling completely lost, completely in over her head right now.]

That's good. [His expression is gentle as he looks up from his efforts to set up a trap.] Please try to hold onto that, okay? There's a lot of things that are probably going to happen that are going to hurt you in the next little while. Mr. Miller, the man over the speaker, he's not known for being gentle when he's trying to fix problems.

Remember he's not the cleverest bloke around, though. You can outsmart him. We've done it before, and we'll do it again here.

I'm scared. I'm not...I'm not sure I even know who I am anymore, and I don't know what to do. What did he--how'd you outsmart him before? How did you get out of this the last time?

You're Tess. An extraordinarily handy cook and a very kind woman. I'd say that's enough to be getting on with. And it's more than a lot of people know for sure about themselves in a place like this.

He tried to make us hurt ourselves as part of one of his games. There were points where we had to stick a part of our bodies into a hole. Just the size of a finger. When you did that, there was a guillotine that cut it off. There was a very clever little kid with me named Frisk. They figured out the rule was you only needed to stick a body part in. So, they bunched up their hair and stuck that in. It worked.

This is a place where you've got to think outside the box. We had help from people outside where we were and from the Admin. I reckon we'll get that this time, too.

What the fuck. I get--I get the point of telling me that, but what the fuck. What the actual fuck.

[She wraps her arms tight around her torso.]

You think the others can get to us?

I think we'll get out by working together with them. There'll be some link to the outside we get. I'm not sure when, but you can bet it'll come, Tess. I promise.

Like a game. Like...like it's by design, like there are rules he's going to follow.

[And here she is, unaware that she's come to this conclusion before.]

Why? Why would he give us that link, let them help us if there's something he wants from us?

Experiment's probably more the word. [Experiments, like they're lab rats.] And I'm not convinced Mr. Miller is entirely human. Not this version of him, anyway. It might be part of his programming to follow a certain set of parameters.

...You think we've been kidnapped by a computer program?

You've seen "Tron," right? [It's not that weird, really.] And, no. Sorry. Afraid it's only got more peculiar since I arrived here.

The new one, yeah. I mean, it's not new anymore....

Right. Sorry I asked.

[John doesn't want to scare her, but he wants to prepare her.]

Just try to stay strong, Tess, and maybe get some sleep while you can. We don't usually get room temperature. [It's usually a prelude to something awful.]

[motherserpent]

Right. Sleep.

[She can see the wisdom of the suggestion.]

Are you...are you going to sleep, too?

Yeah. [No.]

I'll try my best, anyway.

Yeah. Yeah, we should probably all...do that.

[She shifts down a little, but doesn't show much sign of getting comfortable. She's pretty sure getting comfortable just isn't going to be a thing.]
