[ Royce makes an annoyed sound. ]

What, you think whatever it is that's going to happen here is going to be pleasant? [ And he sounds annoyed, too. ] Whatever Miller does, regardless of whatever meaning he assigns to it, it's going to be bad, and it's going to feel like punishment.

Moron. [ Royce mutters, kicking the barrier. Usually he's not so petulant, but he doesn't feel good. ]

No, but-

[He makes a frustrated noise of his own.]

We shouldn't call it something that...that implies it's earned somehow. Whatever his reasons for doing anything he does, they don't deserve to be the least bit justified by anyone, even poetically.

[He would be more open to leaving it as just the figure of speech it is, himself, but thanks to recent events, he's had this particular problem on his mind, and he isn't sufficiently recovered from his extended sleeplessness to collect himself enough to see it.]

[ Royce laughs, meanly. ]

Maybe you didn't earn it. [ He curls back down into the cell. ] Or, more likely, you did and you just don't want to admit it.

Weren't you there when we first met this man? This isn't about whether it does deserve it.

[And the pit isn't the thing here he deserves punishment for. The tower, of course, but certainly not from Miller.]

It's about what he deserves. This is the man who tried to make us kill each other to achieve a common goal! Do not justify his actions, whatever they will be, they don't deserve even a symbolic level of dignity.

I really don't care.

It doesn't matter. None of the things you're saying matters, you're just picking at my word choice.

Words have meaning, you can't-...you can't say they don't. "Monster" implies a ferocity by nature. "Anomaly" is just...different. Unfortunate. A problem with their very beings that did not have to be, but is nonetheless out of their control. It is only two different words for the same being, but they do carry different meanings.

[He does see it, that it is a matter of semantics, but he is also very passionate about this particular issue, and what began as a mere painful twist of interdimensional metaphysics has worn down over his time here into something raw and guarded against the slightest touch.]

[ There's so much eye-rolling going on over here. Sorry, Enoch. Royce doesn't answer, because he thinks he's being lectured and he's not interested. ]

[He lets it sit, and it seems the matter might be dropped for good. It's only after they receive their meal that Enoch speaks up again in Royce's direction.]

I'm sorry. This place has been wearing on me.

[bywolves]

Wears on everybody. [ Royce says finally, still vaguely annoyed. ] You're not special.

I know. I'm not trying to say I am. I'm only apologizing for what it's led me to.

[He would stand by the word choice issue, but this was never the place to get into an argument. If Miller meant to pit them against one another again, he had a ready decision right here. His voice is quiet in worry of what he may have given their potential tormentor.]

Fine. You apologized, congratulations. That's done us a whole lot of good, here.

[warriorscribe]

[Some people appreciate apologies, he wants to say, but holds his tongue. No more of that, not here or now.

So instead he just sighs and, though Royce probably can't see him from his cell, turns away, sitting with his back to the barrier. Royce wants this conversation to be done, he'll oblige.]
