What?

[Quark feels like some piece of him is being pulled back to the present. Like he hadn't even noticed Beckett was there--and really, he hadn't. He looks up at him, blinks himself out of a daze, and it takes him a full moment to get an expression even remotely befitting of his mixed feelings regarding Beckett. When Quark takes an awkward step away from the vampire, it's fortunately not any closer to the edge.]

I'm not. I don't want to die.

[The step away is welcome, awkward or not. Beckett takes one of his own - which, unfortunately, does bring him a little closer to the edge. He doesn't notice. If nothing else, Quark is a handy distraction for the moment.

Quark says he doesn't want to die. Beckett believes him, probably, but he looks on anyway, his expression remote. Sealed. Wondering, in a way that disturbs even him a little, what the voice from the Pit is doing to this very damaged child's mind.]

Most everyone would say so. And yet, here ever so often we are.

[He bristles, though he doesn't know why, and wraps his arms around himself. Quark finds himself watching Beckett's feet, how close they are to the edge of the pit.]

[He isn't looking for it, so Beckett misses Quark's new focus. He's almost with his back to the edge now. Just ignore the damn thing.]

Even if I did still want to die, I'm not going to let myself be compelled into it. If that's my choice, it had damn well better be my choice.
