John purses his lips.]

Fine. Maybe go be busy not right up against the edge of the pit. Someone might think about pushing you in.

[harlequinofhate]

Hey, who hasn't fantasized about pushing folks around? Goodness knows I have! I'm doing it right now!

[He sees that Watson isn't rising to the bait and wiggles a finger.]

Thinking about giving me a shove, doc?

[John offers him a thin-lipped smile.]

You're not nearly interesting enough to think about.

[harlequinofhate]

There aren't too many interesting people here, are there?

[A sigh.]

Batsy, he's interesting.

And that dame with the hat. Fran? Feena?

Fiona?

It was Fiona, wasn't it?

Her style had pizzazz.

[John's grip on the shovel tightens and he's very clearly having consciously restrain himself again. He's not smiling anymore, speaking through gritted teeth in a low voice.]

Don't you dare talk about her, you bloody bastard.

[He's desperate for the other man to give him a reason. Just give him a reason in this moment.]

[Joker smiles. A large spotted hyena pads up and sniffs around his feet.]

Why? I was complimenting her.

There was a wonderful crunch when I caved her pretty little head.

[Something inside snaps, the strings wound too tight finally giving up the ghost. John's shovel is flying before he's even consciously aware of the movement. It's the flat of the shovel, and it's aimed at the Joker's midsection, swinging so that a hit will either knock the man away from the Pit's edge or force him to dodge away from it.

The world is red, and he's not aiming to kill, but hurt? He's aiming to hurt as much as he can. It's not particularly civil or reasonable, but god if giving in doesn't feel good.]

[What a beautiful reaction.

Joker swerves to the side and swings the fireplace poker at the back of John's knees in an attempt to send him stumbling into the pit.]

[John redirects and turns on his heel to block the hit. It stops him going over immediately, but it puts him in a position to be knocked in with a good shoulder-check, provided the Joker's confident he can regain his balance and not go over, as well.]

[Joker lurches towards John, gripping the poker between two hands. For a moment it may seem like he's about to take a swing but instead he slams the doctor with the weight of his entire upper body.]

[jumpthegun]

[The doctor flails, but he's not exactly equipped to hold his ground at the edge of a pit against someone that much larger than him. He loses his shovel and makes a valiant effort to grapple with the Joker, drag him down in to the abyss with John. But the man seems to slip through his fingers.

His fall is a silent one, blank-faced. John can at least deny the Joker the pleasure of a snarl or yelp.]

[He cups a hand to his mouth.]
