No, I'd rather prepare you, I think. It's not everyone, yeah, all right, but you're gonna find yourself talking to many depressed people all the same.

I don't think that leaves me as the one who needs to be prepared for anything. Unless you've got a list of people you want me to cheer up?

[Alfie leans forward, settling elbows on knees with a frown.]

Are you misunderstanding on purpose, mate, or is this all accidental?

Tell me what there is to misunderstand.

Yeah, there's death. There's loss. There's hopelessness. But apart from that last one, none of it's real as long as we're here.

I've dealt with worse. Helping people who've suffered through more than just waiting a long time. I don't know about you, but where I'm from, the dead stay dead. Families don't get their loved ones back once they've been taken. The most anyone can hope for is to get even. And I can't even promise them that.

So this room-- this town-- it's bad, but how is it not just a bunch of captives feeling sorry for themselves?

So quit it. Act like everything's fine, and it will be. We're still alive. We can still find a way out.

[devoutish]

[His eyes narrow, and he angles his shoulders away from Junpei.]

Spoken like a man who's been here all of five fucking minutes.

You're not being told to lose all hope, but be fucking realistic about it. Yeah? And when you're told that it will get worse, and that those who have been here for a long time are in a bad way, so that you can begin to prepare for it - don't whinge that that information should have been left out because it's too depressing. I can already tell, right, that if you're still alive in two months, you're gonna be doing very badly unless you sort out your expectations.

[It can always get worse, says Alfie the Debbie Downer. He tips his hat to Junpei, but the motion is exaggerated, more mocking than polite.]

[He gives a short, almost harsh laugh, at that.]

That's it, huh?

[Well, okay. If it's an enemy Alfie wants, he's got one. Junpei won't be backing out of his made up challenge. Come Day 390, he fully intends to gloat about how he's still fine. Of course, he's pretty sure that won't be possible. They'll be free before then, without a doubt.]
