[Stephen raises an eyebrow entirely too primly for someone with such an unkempt beard.]

[He will actually show off his gear in a little ballet pose. Look, he lives the wannabe Cash aesthetic, don't hate.]

[Yes, he knows that's Spanish, by the twist of his mouth into a sardonic little smile. He thinks he's funny.]

[That earns him a scoff.]

[Actually, considering he knows Stephen is (or at least claims to be) a doctor and a wizard, he probably does have an idea.]

So what were you doing with those pills? Making them disappear?

[At least he sounds a little less like a hardass about it now.]

[Stephen, who has already finished putting the pills away while they were talking, waves his hands in a vaguely arcane gesture. David might notice that those hands are hella scarred; the nastiest-looking part is where someone apparently once carved a drawing of an eye into the back of each one, but there are layers and layers of scarring to be be seen. He snorts, and lets them drop.]

I told you, counting. This is a little too good of an opportunity for one or two bottles to walk away if I'm not paying attention.

[Oh, David notices and his eyes narrow when he squints at the scars. He's not being subtle about seeing them but he doesn't comment on it for now either.]

Like literally walking or are you afraid you'll get mugged?

[Stephen's eyes narrow in turn as he sees the direction of David's gaze. He gives a little twitch of his shoulders that definitely isn't enough to make his cloak ripple forward to wrap closer around him the way it does, letting him tuck his hands out of sight.]

In case you hadn't noticed, we have our share of addicts and dealers here. Wouldn't be the first time I've been mugged.

[Granted, the two times he's been mugged were back in his home world and then in an alternate timeline. Hard to let go of that kind of experience, though.]

Oh, I've noticed.

[You're getting another look, Stephen. He's a cop and he's seen the way you were hunched over these things. The scarred hands get some sympathy points though and again, David leaves it at that.

After all, it's not his jurisdiction.]

So who are the dealers and who are the addicts?

[Stephen scoffs.]

Are you going to start arresting people?

[jmencalisse]

This is Alaska. I have no jurisdiction here. Where am I supposed to bring them?

I don't even have handcuffs.

[He'd spread his hands, but he's still hiding them.]

But if you want to know about the addicts, you can start with Doctor House.

He's a doctor, too?

[thewarningafter]

[Stephen narrows his eyes; furrows his brow.]

There are more of us here than you might expect.

[It's not so unusual, then. Not something he can really be considered to have in common with House, surely.]

[jmencalisse]

[You keep telling yourself that, Stephen. He kind of senses there's a lot of beef between you two.]

So is House a dealer or a user?

[Zero hesitation on that answer.]

Chronic pain before he came here. Miracle of miracles, he's been healed, and yet his opioid use continues.

[jmencalisse]

[Well, interesting. That didn't take long. What happened to the reluctance of talking to the cop?]

So he came in a user?

[Honestly, David could see how a withdrawal in a place that is literally a drug horror trip might prove challenging.]

Where's the stuff coming from?

[It helps when he gets to talk about someone he hates but who he's pretty sure can't actually do anything to retaliate against him.]

After the administrator cut off his supply? Prescription arrangements with third parties. Supplies have been running low for months, but who cares, right?

So others ask the admin for drugs and then give it to him.

[Playing the system of this shithole, David can at least appreciate that.]

[And Stephen's guard comes right back up.]

What is your story?

[thewarningafter]

Well, my career as a neurosurgeon ended prematurely thanks to a car crash, and when Western medicine failed me I traveled to Kathmandu in search of healing, met someone called the Ancient One who taught me to tap into powers previously beyond my imagination, and somehow ended up as the Earth's first line of defense from ancient evils that reside in neighboring dimensions.

[Sorry, David, were you asking about the drugs? Because you asked for Stephen's story.]

[jmencalisse]

[Oh, why don't you fuck right off.]

... So then why are we here, do you just suck at your job or what.

[thewarningafter]

[Ouch. Stephen makes a face.]
