[Calling out to him has the desired effect...to an extent. Because at his name, He snaps his head up, then turns around to face her.]

Miss Diana?

[And in turning, his weight shifts, and his body wobbles. His expression becomes panicked, too aware of what's happening, and he throws out his arms to try and balance himself.]

Miss Diana!

[As she rushes forward he tries to reach for her. It's all happening so quickly, but with such a painful, drawn-out slowness.]

[She sees him wobble at the edge and her heart seizes with fear. He'll fall in an instant, and she can't let him, she promised she would protect him—!

She grabs for him as he stretches his arms out and yanks him to safety—maybe a little too hard, too panicked, because as she pulls and then pushes him away from the pit, she pushes herself back in turn.

Back towards the edge, where the heel of her shoe slips and she feels the ground fall away from her.]

[As he's pushed away from her, Quark stumbles and goes rolling backward against the safe stretch of ground farther away from the pit. He's dazed, but her jerks back up, like he knows what's about to happen. It's all moving in slow motion. He sits up, and now Diana is falling, falling in his place, off balance. His heart stops. He screams and scrabbles forward on his hands and knees, thrusting his arm out to try and catch her.]

[She scrambles for purchase as a frightened gasp fills her lungs, survival instinct overriding the logic that would normally tell her Quark isn't strong enough to hold her, and reaches for his outstretched hand despite that. But she's falling back too fast, her foot slipping off of the edge of the pit entirely.

Her heart hammers in her chest, her mind racing—she's falling, she can't get back out, there's nothing to hold on to, she's just going to fall until she finds out what's at the bottom—it all processes in an instant, and the last conscious choice she can make is to call out to Quark as her view of him begins to shrink.]
Be careful! Don't jump!

[He can't jump in after her. He can't.]

No...no! No!

[Quark tries to grab her, but his hand never reaches her. It never finds purchase. And all at once she's gone, a pinprick in his vision, her words lingering long, long after she's been swallowed up by the darkness. And there he is, still halfway hung over the ledge, grasping for nothing.]

Diana! Diana! Please! Diana?

[But he knows even as he calls for her that no answer is coming. And it's his fault, all his fault. She wouldn't have fallen if he hadn't been so careless. If he hadn't been listening to that voice. The voice that he knows is bad. What's wrong with him? How could he let this happen? Tears well up in Quark's eyes, his throat tightening as his breath hitches.]

Come back.
