Then they're prepared to handle the consequences, I'd think. Everyone is scared of getting hurt, but sometimes it's more important to take the chance.

Hey, I'm good at taking chances! In fights, I mean! I've fought monsters of all sorts to protect even the most ungrateful people. I don't mind getting physically hurt at all! But...I'm still scared of the other kind of pain. That hurts more than being stabbed through the heart, or hit by a train. [Ugh he didn't mean to say that last bit.]

I've survived it by trying not to care about people. Hiding from them. But I know I can't stay like that forever. It doesn't work that way... [He's usually much more in denial about this. Stupid truth-forcing event.]
