[Tifa is still feeling strange around Alfie and Royce, so she tries to keep herself busy. At first, she leaves John alone, figuring he needs space, but after a while, when he continually ignores her whenever she enters the room, she goes to sit beside him.]

Um, John? Is everything okay?

[He hears her voice and knows he needs to respond because not responding would be worse. John takes a breath and looks over at her.]

Not really, no. I'm sorry, Tifa. I won't be very good company tonight. Just... I just need today. I'll be better tomorrow. [He'll be better at covering things.]

It's okay.

[She hesitates, then offers him her hand.]

Would talking help?

[He takes her hand and the numbness gives way to more emotion, which John stomps down on, hard, even as his lips twist into a frown. It's a moment to swallow and just breathe before he replies.]

People come back after the first time more often than any other. He said he'd come back. He promised this time. Sherlock.

That's right. Kunsel figured out the odds, didn't he? [She laces her fingers through his, squeezing.] What happened?

An experiment in the morgue. He always has to prove he's right. He wanted to see if the Eye App and having more than one person at the same time would protect them. It didn't.

[He works to keep his voice level.]

[That sounds a little like House, but she won't say it.]

I'm so sorry, John. I'm sure he'll come back.

Who gets that lucky twice? [John has to swallow and turns his head away from Tifa momentarily.]

Sorry. I'm sorry. I just need a day. Like I said, I'll be better tomorrow.

[She squeezes his hand again, voice gentle.]

You don't have to be better tomorrow. It's okay to be upset.

[She's sweet, much too sweet. John clears his throat.]

Yeah, I do. Haven't got the time for this. We're running out of time, the Joker's running loose, Stein won't do something to make himself safer... too many things. I've already ward enough time.

There are a lot of other people here who can worry about those things. You can take a break for a few days.

Two of those things are directly my responsibility, Tifa. It doesn't work that way. I can't just take a break.

[Tifa sighs as she tucks her hair behind her ear.]

Okay. Just... don't be too hard on yourself, alright? That won't help either.

[Asking him not to be too hard on himself is like asking the sun not to rise. He's probably worrying her enough.]

Yeah. Yeah, you're right.

[But that's not really agreement.]
