And you do mean things because you said you're bad, and Royce does mean things because he says he's bad, but neither of you liked it when Miss Tifa and I told you that you were bad and tried to do mean things to you.
But you both can do mean things to Mister House just because he's mean and does mean things.
[What she's trying to say is, ya'll are hypocrites.]

[He sits back against the arm of the couch. On the one hand, it's kind of early for a big philosophical discussion, but on the other... he's proud of you, girl.]
What you and Tifa did, you know that was different. Yeah? That was the town. It wasn't you.

That was only us. Other people may do mean things to you, but it won't be the town. You would still feel the same way, right? I think Mister House feels like you did when we did mean things because of the town, except--worse. Because the town doesn't make you do them.
You do them on your own.
[A pause.] Mister House gave me food because I said I was hungry. [She looks at Alfie again, eyes unwavering.] I was mad at Mister House, too, because he ripped my drawing and said mean things. I thought about being mean to him.
But then... I thought I don't have to be mean, I don't think. The town is already being mean to Mister House, so I don't have to do it. He's already scared, and he isn't very strong, but he doesn't want you to know that, so he's mean. You can see it in his eyes.

[He leans forward a little, hands on his knees.]
I will never again hurt him or anybody else with you in the house. You have my word.
[He knows she wants him to promise more than that, but he doesn't want to lie to her.]

But you're going to hurt them somewhere else.

Men like me and Royce, we have reasons for doing what we do - and they are not always nice reasons. I could explain. I will, if you like.
[If it's really what she wants, he figures she deserves at least that, even though he's reluctant.]
But you've already seen many things that you shouldn't have had to see. This isn't something you should be made to understand. Honestly, Emily, truthfully - I'd rather protect you.

Why are there reasons for being mean to Mister House?

[Emily will remember that.]

[Mostly he just doesn't like putting that frown on her face.]

I don't want you to think that I would ever hurt you.
