[After the chicken nuggets, she isn't very interested in the pear, so she puts it with her things, but the water is a relief. Processed chicken nuggets aren't that great eating without drink.

In the kitchen, she stands for a long time at the door, quiet, holding the bottle of water and watching Royce with the paper whale.]

[ Royce waits until the song is finished playing before he finally speaks up, not looking at her. ]

I'm not going to hurt you.

[A pause, then she moves into the kitchen further, not quite as cautious.] Did Mister House say mean things to you?

Yes. [ He'll be honest. ] Not just mean things. Deeper than that. He attacked who I am. It weighs more than just a mean thing.

Oh. [She stands by the counter down from him.] Mister Aflie says nice and mean things can fit in everyone without them blowing up.

Mister House is mean a lot, like Mister Sokolov, but... he gave me "chicken nuggets" to eat. So I think he has nice and mean inside him.

Everybody has nice and mean things inside them. [ He finally looks down at her, eyes glowing faintly in the dark, from under his hood. ] Including me. Including Solomons, Tifa, House. Your Corvo, you.

The balance isn't always equal.

I know. That's what Mister Alfie said.

I'm sorry Mister House said mean things to you. He isn't very nice, but I think it's because he's scared.

Did Mister Hadrian tell you anything?

[ As usual, Royce thinks Alfie knows exactly what he's talking about. ] Being scared doesn't give you the right to push people's buttons without consequence.

[ As for that last question, Royce frowns. ] What?

[Her eyes fall to the paper whale.] Mister Hadrian. You have him.

Did he tell you what to do about Mister House?

[ Oh. Royce looks down at the whale. ]

Yeah. [ He looks at Emily again. ] Told me I shouldn't have hurt House with you in the building.

[She kind of just gives Royce a look.] I don't think you're telling the truth.

I think Mister Hadrian would say you shouldn't have hurt Mister House at all, even if he said mean things that made you upset. [Her fingers curl on the counter, supporting her lean.] The Loyalists pretended to be our friends, and they said they wanted to help me be Empress, but they told us a lie. They wanted it for themselves.

And I was a little mad, and I thought maybe Corvo should have hurt them, too. Because they hurt us. But then Corvo said we don't have to hurt them because they just hurt themselves. And if we hurt them, we'll be just like they were. [#empressbatman]

Mister House ripped my drawing, and I was mad about that, too. And Kesara said it's okay to give people what they deserve. So I thought a lot about hurting Mister House. I drew a bad picture. But then I felt better.

I decided it was too much work hurting Mister House. [She looks up.] Because I know he's already sad and scared. You can see it in his eyes. And he's mean because he doesn't want you to feel bad for him.

[ Royce listens, despite the fact that he's annoyed that he's being lectured. ]

I don't care that he's sad and scared. [ Royce looks down at her. ] By your logic, just because he's upset doesn't mean that he gets to say what he did. And what he said was not just a mean thing.

[She frowns not unlike the frown she had with Alfie.] The Pendletons said lots of mean things about me, and mother, and Corvo when I was at the Golden Cat, but... that didn't make it true, so I wouldn't listen to them.

Because if I listened to them and got upset or sad they would know that they made me upset or sad, and they would laugh and think they won.

So I stopped getting mad when they would say mean things because I knew they were stupid, and then they stopped saying mean things.

Don't lecture me. [ He's not having it. ] You don't know what he said.

[Her face bunches.] He's said things just as bad to me and other people! You don't get to pick what's worse!

And I'm the only one not letting him get away with it.
