They're too stupid to hide, they keep throwing themselves in my path to 'talk me out of it', or to 'appeal to my better nature', as if they were not the ones who had forced us down this path.

[Honestly, it's a travesty that it's come to this.]

You're far more obvious than I am, in any case.

They have not reacted that way to me.

[Interesting. Does that mean he is the sort of person others consider too ineffectual to do the work that must be done tonight? Speaking to him would not be a viable survival strategy otherwise.]

If you were one of them I would have killed you already.

[howdull]

[He snorts, loudly and rudely.]

I sincerely doubt that. You obviously have experience and skill in killing, I would even go so far as to hypothesise that as your primary function at creation. But you are young, your reach is minimal, and I am hardly an amateur when it comes to fighting for my life.

[ecks]

[She shifts her weight, momentarily considering hitting him with the shovel to show that yes, she could too kill him if she wanted. But no -- he is one of the Prophet's people.]

I surprised you.

[Frankly, he surprised her. She'd normally do a much better job if she were deliberately stalking someone.]

Who are you?

I am Sherlock Holmes.

[He looks her up and down once, the barest flicker of his eyes.]

And you are Ecks.

[She remembers him. He is taller than she thought he would be. She really should not hit him with a shovel; he is Doctor Watson's friend as well as one of the righteous. She isn't bothered by being identified; she has shown her face on the network several times now and she has never lied about her name beyond it not being the name her creator gave her.]

Yes, I am Ecks. Who have you killed so far?

[howdull]

A murderer.

[Somehow it soothes the voice at the back of his mind when he says that, a reminder that he's only killing those who deserve to die anyway.]

I don't think either of us exactly have the time to stop and chat, do you? There are plenty of others that need to be killed.

[ecks]

They are all murderers.

[And her own rationale in turn. They would all kill the Prophet. The course is clear.

She stares at him for several long seconds, then remembers that the appropriate nonverbal cue for agreement is nodding one's head. She nods.]

Be quieter and you will kill more of them.

[And she'll just turn to go off on her own way.]
