You live on a ship? [If he was trying to play anything down, the attempt has just backfired rather spectacularly.]

A very big one, really? How big? Can it go faster than the speed of light? I've heard that there are ships that can go all the way across the galaxy, just like that!

Pretty small, sorry to disappoint. It's a VCX-100 - little freighter, about forty meters long if that means anything to you. Most of that's cargo room, though, crew quarters are pretty cramped.

Guessing they don't have hyperspace engines where you're from?

That's not little at all! That's two thirds as long as Admiral Nelson's Victory. I can't imagine anything that size flying!

[She is not totally clear on what sailing through space entails, but she imagines it must involve some sort of flying.]

We don't have anything of that sort, no, or droids, or other planets. We still sail the oceans - which is grand - but I should very much like to visit other planets. We have folk here from many other planets, you know,

All you need's a sublight drive to get you out of the planet's atmosphere, and once you're up there it doesn't matter how big you are.

[ Much further than this and he'll be out of his depth; he hopes she doesn't want to know anything about the math. That's what he has Chopper for.

She raises an interesting question, though: ]

Is this your home planet, then? If it's not, you can count at least two.

This is Earth. Even if it isn't my Earth... [She's not yet entirely clear on how that part works, which is to say, she is entirely unclear on it.] But there is a lot to explore here so I am very lucky.

[She is probably the only person in Norfinbury who thinks that of her situation. It makes her feel rather good about herself. Enough to make her bold in her questions.]

But how do ships so large come to go so quickly? Do you use the Force for it?

[At worst it's an easily shrugged off guess. At best, she's going to really amaze him.]

-The Force-?

[ Kanan is usually better at hiding his surprise, but he's just woken up in the middle of Snowhell after facing down the possibility of being sent to Mustafar, where Jedi go to die. It' probably excusable, then, that his face is for a moment nothing but naked shock. The shutters come down quickly, though, and take with them all the earlier levity. ]

The Force is a myth. Anyone who believed in it's long gone.

[ And, somewhere past that bitterness is a question: ]

What do you know about the Force?

[A myth - well, that makes perfect sense. Zach did say that the story he told wasn't really true. She's a little surprised at the force of Kanan's shock, how much the two words put him on edge. Perhaps it is a very important myth.

She has a good memory. She musters it now.]
They say a long, long time ago... [In a galaxy she suspects that for Kanan is not so far away.] The Force was a power that flowed through all living things, and those who would train hard in its techniques could master it and do very great things with it. But some of them were wicked and used it to rule great wicked empires. Darth Vader was the very worst of them.

kanan's taken from right before he meets Vadar and I am regretting it right now.

[ It's bizarre to hear his own world, his own life laid out that way like history written in a holocron. The empire, Vadar, the Living Force...

The Living Force, which had somehow spread through universe enough to make itself known even to those that believed it only a story. Kanan wants to freeze, but he has to keep on his feet. ]

Vadar? The Emperor's right hand? That's not history, it's current events. For me, anyway.

[Kesara gives a soft but certainly audible double take. Is he from the time when Zach's story was really happening? But he can't be, if he thinks the Force is a myth. Maybe she has it all wrong about his world. Actually that would make a lot more sense than him having stepped right out of a story she's just heard, which Zach said wasn't even real. What are the odds!]

You haven't heard about any planets being destroyed, have you, sir?

[ There's a silence. It's long, and heavy, filled with only the sound of Kanan's breathing.

Finally, after long enough that Kesara might thing he's forgotten it's recording, Kanan asks: ]

-Planets?
heavensreader: (Default)

[personal profile] heavensreader 2016-10-13 01:28 pm (UTC)(link)
[The silence, Kesara thinks, is a very reasonable response. A story about the destruction of planets is horrific enough. If the story is true...]

Oah, yes. They say the dark empire have built this weapon that destroys planets. Now they go about the galaxy and no one can stop them except the princess and her droids and her farmboy champion.

[She is getting a little vague on the details.]

I don't know a princess, or a farm boy.

[ Just five people doing their best against an empire. An empire building superweapons, apparently. ]

I - sorry, kid, I may need some time to think about this. That story of yours... did it have a happy ending?
