I knew something would happen to him...it always does, always has.
[What else can he say? What does he even have the right to say, really? He'd let Beckett go and do this instead of pressing the issue. And while he knows that was the right thing to do, to let him discover where his boundaries were anymore and not stifle him...]
I don't know. There's still hope, it's still early. But I knew-...
[Give him a moment, his mind is stuck on this one thing.]

He'll be back. You think the town can hold him down? Please.

I...I hope so. I have to hope so. I still- [his voice breaks, and in that second he loses sight of what he was trying to say. There's so much he still has unresolved, it feels like.]
I've owed him a drink for months.

[He can't really offer much more help than that, except as a small positive voice in the sea of hopelessness. And he's already tired of all the hopelessness he himself's been carrying.]

[He wonders if that sense of trading his soul away was real at all. It sure feels like a part of him could die forever if Beckett did.
But that's nothing new, after all.]
Have you ever- have you ever cared for anyone so deeply that-...
...I can't describe it. [He breathes out the tiniest of laughs.] Have you ever cared for anyone so deeply it defied all words?
no subject
Absolutely, yeah.
Sometimes it's an unspoken thing. Maybe it doesn't need words, but you both just...know.

[How long had it been before one of them - himself, he's sure - had finally said how important the other was to them? And even then, it hadn't been enough - there was always, always more to say. There still was.]
...Do you think it's important that these unspoken things not remain unsaid forever? That they be affirmed?
no subject
They need to be said.

[He needed to hear someone else say it, though. He can't trust his own thoughts. Not when he's seeing specters in every shadow. There were demons that hid in the shadows the way he's seeing. He knows they aren't here. If they were, the angels would be.]
I'm sorry, for what happened to you.
[His grief? No, clearly it's more important that he handle this hint of someone else's first.]
no subject
--never mind.
Anyway, don't lose your chance, okay?
no subject
[There's sort of a resigned sound to it, but he's clearly somewhat calmer now.]
I should...see to the others. Thank you, Peter.
no subject
[He genuinely means that.]
Stay warm, man.
