Characters: Diana and Quark Location: Residential Area 1/2 (I'll update this tomorrow kill me) Date: Days 341-342 Summary: And the Pendulum Event Warnings: Paranoia, possible language.
[Whatever it is that had gotten into Quark the day before, it's worse the dawn of the second day. But, worse as it is, Quark seems more willing to talk to her. Physically, he stays as wary as ever, but it's like some idea has gotten hold of him. Now, now he knows how to address this.]
[It's been painful having Quark avoid her, but Diana knows it isn't his fault. Something is making him act this way. She's just been doing her best to acquiesce to his demands in the hopes that it will placate him.
When he says he might have a solution, Diana perks up as she looks over at him and gives him a smile.] Really? What are you thinking?
There's got to be some way to run diagnostics, right? If we could compare a piece of you to the others who have red lines, maybe something will start to make more sense.
[He has no solid basis for why this could, would, or should work...but he's adamant.]
[Well, it's true that it can be helpful to compare the DNA of patients who have diseases with unknown causes, but that's usually only part of a very long and difficult research process...
Still, she doesn't want to shoot down Quark's idea, so she just keeps smiling.] I'm sure Eve already has samples of our DNA. Maybe you could ask her if she can do that.
[Well, that's unsettling. The way he'd said "a piece of you" sent up some red flags, but Diana didn't want to believe it was anything strange... If the others are saying similar things, she should probably be careful.
But it's only a lock of hair. Nothing that will actually hurt her. So she puts her smile back on, albeit somewhat uncertainly.] Okay. If you think it will help. Do you want me to cut it for you? [That seems safest, but Quark has been awfully convinced that Diana is going to attack him, so she's not sure if holding a sharp object might set him off.]
[He looks notably relieved at Diana's agreeable nature, and even manages to smile at her. He shakes his head.]
Yeah, that's fine. Here.
[He pulls his knife out of his pocket...but sets it on the ground and slides it over to her, too nervous to get any closer than that, at least for now.]
[Even though she can't accept the notion that Quark would actually hurt her, she's still a little relieved when he agrees to let her do the cutting. She pulls out a bit of hair from behind her neck, where the cut shouldn't be too visible.
After that, she picks up the knife slowly, hoping to avoid startling him by moving too fast. Holding the lock of hair out so that it's taut, she uses her other hand and sets the knife's edge against it so that it will free about an inch and a half of hair.] Is this enough?
[Quark eyes where she puts the knife to her hair like a hawk. Is he...eager? Maybe he just really wants to see her better! He nods.]
Yeah! I think that'll work. Thanks, Miss Diana. I'm really glad we're doing this. I'm sure you'll be back to normal soon, once we find a way to run some tests.
[Luckily(?) for Quark, Diana just takes this for granted as more of Quark's paranoia. Once he gives his approval, she presses the knife down against her hair.
However, she has never cut hair with a knife, and this knife is pretty dull from its long life in Norfinbury. So she has to saw with it until the end of the lock finally comes free from the rest. This leaves her with some...pretty rough edges, but at least she managed it without cutting herself.
She sets down the knife on the floor before holding the chunk of hair out to Quark, still managing her tentative smile.] Here. I hope we can find a way to figure out what's going on. I know everyone's really worried...
[With the knife safely on the floor arm's length away from both of them, Quark feels secure enough to step forward and take her hair. He doesn't linger, but as he holds it in a closed fist he steps back and beams.]
Hey, maybe while we're waiting for what to do next, we could talk more. I don't know that much about you aside from what I heard about the Decision Game...why don't you tell me something about yourself? Just something about you!
[After Quark claims the cut lock, Diana adjusts her hair back to its normal resting position. It's probably silly to worry about how her hair looks, but she still hopes it isn't too noticeable...
At least Quark seems satisfied for now. It's a little easier to smile genuinely with that in mind.] Sure. Though I'm not very interesting... Um, I've always wanted a pet! But I work such long hours at the hospital, I've never had time for one. [This is only part of the truth, as the other reason was her fear that her ex-husband would hurt any animal in their home, but she doesn't want to talk about him...]
Having a pet would be really cool. I like animals, but I don't really get a chance to interact with them much. If you could pick anything, what kind of pet would you go for?

I don't think she wants to help. I don't think she really understands whats going on right now.

Her thumb rubs along the edge of her bracelet as her smile falls.] I don't think any of us do... But, um, what should we do, then?

[How to put this tastefully? Hm. Quark just decides to go for it.]
Could I just have a lock of your hair? That wouldn't be too much to ask for, would it, Miss Diana?
