[log] Lean on me [closed]

Characters: The Sorcerer Not-Yet-Supreme, Star-Cat, Star-Lord, and the Librarian
Location: Building 318 and various
Date: Day 339-343
Summary: The visiting of Flynn Carsen to the clan of Snow.
Warnings: References to character death, drowning, blood (because this is a scary building), more CW's in ensuing threads.

318: The stench of blood is thick in this garage, with blood long-soaked into the concrete floor, staining nearly the entire expanse. There are empty wooden tables to be sat on if you would rather not sit on the floor, though they've all been flipped as if in anger. One of the tables has been broken into pieces and burned, and another has pieces missing as if someone had begun to break it into pieces but was interrupted. The whole place has a hostile air to it, and the walls sound like they're breathing at night. "ALPHONSE ELRIC, DAY TWO HUNDRED AND EIGHTY TWO, CONTACT @LELRIC FOR ANY ASSISTANCE." "ALPHONSE ELRIC, DAY TWO HUNDRED AND EIGHTY SIX, PLEASE CALL @LELRIC FOR ANY ASSISTANCE NEEDED." and "ALPHONSE ELRIC, DAY TWO HUNDRED AND EIGHTY EIGHT, FOR ANY ASSISTANCE PLEASE CONTACT @LELRIC ANY TIME." are written on one of the walls.

Peter's reaction is so endearing Flynn drops his head and smiles into his fist before continuing. He's enjoying himself, too; never let anyone believe the Librarian doesn't like his dramatics or having an audience. Especially one that is so captivated and into things.

"The Treasure Chest went into the second chamber where the Spikes lay in wait. They looked up at it from their pit. 'Hey, hey, hey - what are you doing out here'?"

His voice becomes hectic and sharp, because there are many Spikes and he tries to capture the multitude of their voices. "Again, the Treasure Chest said 'The Treasure Hunters aren't finding me, so I will find the Treasure Hunters'. 'That's such a good idea!' said the Spikes. 'But what will we do if nobody comes to fall in here or figure out the way around us?' The Treasure Chest thought about that for a moment - true. It seemed a little unfair to just leave them behind. He liked the Spikes, much more than the Flame Traps, and they had always protected it well. 'Tell you what,' the Treasure Chest said. 'When I find the Treasure Hunters I will let them know about this place so they'll come and try to beat your riddle.' The Spikes seemed happy with that. 'Okay, okay, okay! Good, good, luck, luck!'

So on went the Treasure Chest to the first chamber." He pauses, glancing over at Peter. "What do you think was in the first chamber?"

"Exactly that!"

To be fair, he would have said the same thing if Peter had chosen arrows, a guarding mummy, moving walls or swinging blades; he can work in a giant rolling boulder. Who probably speaks in a deep rumbly voice, like a bear, so here goes.

"'Hello Treasure Chest', it said when they entered the first chamber. 'Where are you going?' The Boulder hung close to the ceiling where it waited to rumble down when needed, lazy and content in its nest of cobwebs and overgrowing vines. 'I'm going to find the Treasure Hunters' explained the Treasure Chest. 'Oh!' exclaimed the Boulder. 'That sure sounds like an adventure. I should love to come along but I am so comfortable up here. And the Spiders and Vines always make such a fuss when they have to web me a new bed, you know?' The Treasure Chest nodded. 'Of course. I will see you later, Boulder.' But the Boulder called it back. 'Treasure Chest! How are you planning on finding the Treasure Hunters?'"

Flynn makes a meaningful pause.

"The Treasure Chest stopped. It... hadn't actually thought about that! How was it going to find the Treasure Hunters? How was it going to find the Explorers, the Pirate Ships, the Adventurers? After all, all it had ever done was wait for them to find it. And all the maps it knew lead here."

"No, you really can't." Flynn smiles, both at Peter's enthusiastic response and his concern for Treasure Chest.

"The Treasure Chest thanked the Boulder and called back 'I know how!' and left the cave. It didn't want the Boulder to tell the Spikes and Flame Traps that it didn't know what to do. Outside, it sat for a long time, looking up at the sky. It marveled at the stars. It had never been outside the cave ever since it was put there, so of course it had not seen the stars in a very long time.

Feeling sad and discouraged, it called up to them. 'Stars, Stars! Do you remember me? You saw me when I was brought here. Now I want to leave but I don't know where to go! I do not have a map - how am I to find my way?'

And the Stars said 'Hello, we remember you'." Flynn's voice turns soft because the Stars sparkle and they are nice and they have seen so many things in their life. "The Treasure Chest felt really welcome and a bit better. 'Hello', they said again, 'we remember you. We do not have a map for you. But we have guided many without a map before. They looked to us and we helped them make their map. This is the way it has always been. All Explorers look to us and we welcome all Explorers. If you wish to be an Explorer, we will guide your way.'

And the Treasure Chest was happy because it understood. It would just have to make a map itself. A map that had never been there before. A map that lead the Treasure to the Hunters."

And they both know that Explorers are the best!

"The Treasure Chest told the Stars it wished to be an Explorer. And the Stars lit up for the Treasure Chest, forming lines between them to show the most beautiful pictures in the night sky. 'Now you can make your map' they told the Chest. 'You just have to look where you are and where we are while you travel, then you will never be lost'.

That was really encouraging, so the Treasure Chest looked up where it was and then wandered into the deep forest that surrounded the cave where it had resided. The forest was dark and damp and actually a little bit scary? Wind howled in the big branches of the trees and the creaked heavily with age, cchhrrrkkkk. Hundreds of tiny glowing eyes seemed to watch the Treasure Chest from the black underwood. Many noises filled the air, the shuffling of leaves, the snapping of twigs, was there something moving in the shadows?"

It's true that a storyteller needs an audience and it's actually Peter's enthusiasm and willingness to get so engulfed that spur Flynn on to notch it up to 110%.

"These were all very unfamiliar noises for the Treasure Chest. It was used to the howling of the wind in the cave but that sounded very different on the mossy rocks. The forest, however, seemed to breathe with life and movement. But it couldn't turn back now, so it pressed onwards, into the darkness.

Then suddenly!" Flynn moves forward, his arms spreading as he leans in towards Peter. "Something big broke through the trees right before it! Black, gleaming eyes reflected the moonlight and a harsh, thundering breath almost made the Treasure Chest fall over!"

Flynn stares back at Peter with a (potentially) monstrous grimace.

"And a big, deep, roaring voice rumbled! 'Who walks through my forest at night!'

The Treasure Chest was frozen with fear. It had never seen a creature like this! It knew nothing of the outside world, so the forest's inhabitants were unfamiliar to it. This one here was giant, and covered in hairs – like the Spiders had them, but there were many many more, covering the entire body! There was a big gaping mouth and it had sharp teeth, and it reminded the Treasure Chest of the sharp rocks at the bottom of the pit where the Spikes lived.

'I'm the Treasure Chest!' it said and tried to sound brave even though it was really afraid.

'I am the Bear!' the creature growled. 'Nobody comes into my part of the forest!'"

Well. A bear is probably more terrifying to an eight-year-old than a grown man battling monsters on a regular basis, he can get behind that. It doesn't deter him from continuing the story with just as much enthusiasm as before.

"'I am just passing through', the Chest tried to explain but the Bear was having none of it. He was old and big and stubborn and he was used to all the animals of the forest being afraid of him.

'Nobody comes into my part of the forest!' the Bear roared again. 'I will smash you into tiny little pieces!'" And the Bear raised a mighty paw to bring it crashing down – it would have shattered the wood of the Treasure Chest for sure!"

Now that's more like it. Flynn lets the suspense and Peter's reaction linger for a moment before he presses on.

"The Treasure Chest scrambled to the side, and the paw avoided it by mere inches. What was it supposed to do? It had never fought before. Others had always protected it - the Boulder, the Spikes, the Flame Traps - but they weren't here anymore. It did not know how to defend itself."

He puts his hand back down. "But it wasn't going to give up. It had to find the Treasure Hunters. After all, it was important, the most important Chest of them all. Why would anyone or anything even attack it!"
