[log] Thanks For the Memories, Even If They Weren't So Great [closed]
Characters: Kunsel (
deus_ex_phs) & Zack Fair (
heroproceeding)
Location: Residence Zone One - Building Two
Date: Day 274 - Early Nightfall
Summary: Zack joins the party just as things really start to shake up. Him and Kunsel reunite again. Things are weird 'cause he doesn't remember shit.
Warnings: Memory loss. Ghibli tears. Mentions of freaky deaky Hojo monster and possibly mentions of death and whatever typical Snowhell stuff. Mentions of sickness.
Navigating the tunnels had left a lot- a lot to be desired. More than a few times, Zack had gotten outright lost in the shadows of it. He'd been really, really thankful that someone had told him how to use the flashlight on his tablet 'cause he wasn't sure how in the hell else he would have managed otherwise. Dark, dank, and dreary was an understatement. And if he were to be honest with himself, it really gave him the creeps to the next level.
More than once... or twice... Okay, maybe ten times at least (probably more), he had suddenly whipped around, thinking he had heard something. Someone or something following. Every time, there'd been nothing. But that sure as hell hadn't stopped him from getting this uneasy tingling sensation down his spine like he was seriously being watched anyway. Or followed and they were just being very quiet.
Distractions in the end had first come from when his tablet abruptly started going off and that had spooked him, too, enough to jump before he'd snatched it out of his coat and discovered it was warning him of lockdown just as that Al guy had told him it would. The crueler distraction had been the unruly feeling in his gut that had followed him the following day until he'd finally been unable to resist puking his guts out until he'd been left leaning and dry heaving against a wall for a while before he'd just sunk to the floor and gave up for that day, shooting a text to Kunsel that he was going to be a little bit delayed and hearing back from him that he planned to pick up some supplies anyway.
That day though, he was determined to find him or at least get close to where he was if he could help himself. Determined to try and ignore all the spooky feelings he felt at each turn. Ignore them. Move forward. Almost there. Maybe. He wasn't really sure, but there was a trapdoor at least. A trap door and he was pretty sure he could hear some.. rattling up above? Well, that didn't sound good.
Never mind the fool part of him was already shoving it open and pushing himself out the moment he heard hurried footsteps up above.
Because anomalies don't make sound.

It's been hard just trying not to let his mind jump to conclusions at how familiar that monster's face had been.
He's honestly not quite certain where he is right now. The maps for this town really aren't the best, and then he'd been thrown off his planned course by Hojo- by the monster. The "anomaly." Investigating the basement has been low priority in the face of maintaining his vigil, because the monster out there is maybe just a little more important than finding clues to try to orient himself with. He'd satisfied himself with just basic sweep of the place to make sure there weren't any other entrances the creature could use to get in (and to make sure nothing else was in here with him), and then after that he'd hunkered down by the barricade.
He missed the trap door. It was dark, too dark, even though the light from his tablet should have been more than enough for his SOLDIER eyes to see. It was unnerving, and so was his dulled hearing and strength.
And it also means that he's caught complete off guard when the trap door clatters open. Kunsel whirls an instant later, the knife he'd found in his possessions already in his hand.
"Who's there?" he barks, mind already racing through plans in case the monster somehow found a way in.

"Who else do you... oh..."
And that might be his voice trailing off shortly after, smile fading, because.. that sure sounds like some sort of thing scratching at the door. Enough that Zack's instinctively reaching for the weird sword at his back.
no subject
"Zack!" He barely spares a glance to make sure the barricade is holding before he's crossing the room with swift, desperate strides. If Zack doesn't dodge, he's going to be grabbed.
"Shiva's tits, where the hell have you been?"
It's easy to forget that Zack doesn't remember that he went missing.
no subject
"Oh, you know. Just getting a little sidetracked puking my guts out! The usual!" But it's easier to poke fun than think of that. Easier to wrap his own arms around his friend seeing as he's dropped his guard enough not to worry about the thing on the other side of the door since if Kunsel's confident enough it'll hold, Zack will trust him on this one as he hugs him right on back.
"Sorry if I made you wait, buddy."
no subject
Despite his words, though, and despite his own helmet, Kunsel's eyes rove over Zack with clear concern. "Puking your guts?" He'd been sick, too, but he wouldn't expect Zack to be sick with the same thing.
I... really let this sit for too long. 8'D
But considering how long it'd been. To Kunsel? Himself? The timelines don't really line up. Jarred Zack in too many ways. Threw him off and the underground maze hadn't really helped either. So, it's easier to push it aside. Easier to try and focus on the present, even if he's presently feeling his shoulders being squeezed a little hard while Kunsel looks him up and down while Zack's arms go slack at his side, one only raising long enough to muss at his own hair.
"Yeah, it's like I just got hit by this freak freight train stomach bug or something. But I haven't had one of those in a long, long time. Not since I became SOLDIER, you know? It was really weird. And it sucked, too. Lemme tell you."
Another rattle at the door makes Zack tense now and he looks over towards it. "You make a friend while I've been away?"
ahaha oops
Distracted, he glances at the rattling door, shoulders instinctively tensing. "One of the anomalies we were warned about in the guides," he explains - then pauses and looks sidelong at his friend. "You did read those guides, didn't you?"
Look, he's known Zack to skip on "tutorials" before.
no subject
"Uh... I did some skimming?"
As in... No. No, he didn't even touch them yet. He probably should have. "To be fair, again, I was kinda busy." With the whole puking thing. Just saying. ...Granted, that didn't span his whole trip to meet up with him, but details.
no subject
"To be fair," he shoots that awful pun right back at him, "I think you need to be alive." Alive. Just that word is still enough to thrill him. But priorities. They've got priorities here. "Come on, I think we're better off putting some distance between us and this thing. Let's head into those tunnels you came here through, and I'll fill you in on the guides you skimmed through."
no subject
But he can take a hint. Go back through from where he came. They've got some ground to cover yet. Especially considering how far off that Jim and Zell are. He's still not sure he really believes everything they say, but he's heard enough at least. And they don't seem bad and seem to know more about this place than him and Kunsel put together, so that's more than enough reason to trust them, right? So he figures anyway as he takes to that ladder.
"Hey- by the way. That anomaly- what was it like anyway? I haven't run into one yet."
no subject
Zack should be grateful he missed that nightmare fuel.
no subject
"Guess it could have been worse though." He states this as he hops from one ring to the next of the ladder, not taking it as easily as he feels he usually would. His joints ache. His body feels heavier than it's ever felt and his energy, more depleted than ever. But leave it to Zack to roll with it anyway- as well as he can. "Could have been Sephiroth mixed with a behemoth!"
no subject
But the reports had said the same thing about Zack, and look how wrong they'd been. And it's Sephiroth. If Zack could survive, chances seem pretty good that the general could have made it, too. As much as he itches to know, though, Zack is clearly not going to be able to tell him what happened to his fellow SOLDIER First Class. Kunsel's just going to have to stow his curiosity.
For now.
"What, you think a slower Sephiroth would be more scary than Sephiroth by himself?"
no subject
And for as strong as SOLDIERs can be, Behemoths are still no laughing matter. No laughing matter at all. Though speaking of... he hasn't quite missed that weird pause. Just that little off beat feeling and it gets Zack tilting his head slowly after he lands down at the bottom of the tunnel. The light from the tablet's now shining on his friend as he watches him with curiosity.
"You sure you're okay?"
no subject
He's just as glad that it's as dark as it is down here, though. Makes it harder for Zack to read the expression on his face. Even so, Kunsel makes a point not to look at his friend as he uses the tablet as a weak light to guide his path.
"I'm fine, Zack. Let's just focus on navigating these tunnels."
