It was before all of us were here. In memories. He remembered to do it. [Alfie's not wrong, but John can obfuscate with the truth in this instance.]

And he didn't think that Norfinbury might put that plan on hold for a bit?

He's never had great timing. At least not when it comes to anything emotional. [He sighs.] Have I mentioned he's an idiot?

You wouldn't have needed to even if you hadn't. I've seen it with my own two eyes.

Anyway. That's the situation with him. He's settled down, at least. For now. [As much as Sherlock is capable of settling.]

Mary being here helps. He loves her like he loves me... probably more. He's nicer to her.

Funny - I wouldn't have pegged him as the sort to be the nicest to the ones he loves the most.

He's nice to me in private sometimes. It's just not something that comes out much in public, you know? I'm pretty sure he nearly had a panic attack about having to give the best man's speech at my wedding reception. The murder happening in the middle of it helped settle him down, at least.

Who was murdered at your fucking wedding?

No one, thankfully. But we'd been dealing with another unsolved case that the murderer had been using as a practice run. Sherlock was able to put together that the murderer was at the wedding reception and my commander from Afghanistan was the target, Major Sholto. It was a sharp, thin blade pushed into his back by the wedding photographer while he was setting up shots. Slow-acting. The major wouldn't have bled out until he took off his uniform. The belt was tight enough, it was preventing anything from leaking out.

We got him to hospital and caught the killer. Luckily, DI Lestrade was at the reception to arrest him.

[There's a pause before he answers.]

John, honestly, the two of you enjoy murder more than anybody else I have ever known.

Then all of you enjoy it. You don't enjoy death or suffering; I'm not saying that. But murder? Yeah.

A murder I didn't want or plan for almost happens at my wedding reception and that means I enjoy it? How does that follow?

It's the way you talk about it.

We saved my commander's life. If I sound happy, it's about that. Sherlock's the one who convinced him to go to hospital, by the by. He was just gonna take off his belt and let himself be murdered. Little surprised by it. Sherlock had been jealous as a house cat watching the alley cats play for most of the thing.

That was different. We were discussing our lives and families. It isn't that I think you're incapable of any other sort of conversation.

Would you prefer I distract you with stories about the war? Or cases where there weren't murders? The murders are just more recent. That's why they come to mind.
