[He curls his hands into fists.]

If I run I will return. I will not let you perish to this madness.

[He can't lose anyone, not again. He's already failed Francel, he refuses to fail Watson as well.]

We stole them together.

[A reminder of the last time they'd been in this place, when John had been the Prophet and he and Haurchefant had been working together. John was a light thief, too, but Haurchefant was worse somehow now. He'd kept the lights all for himself.]

And I'm already lost. D'you see what this is? We're turning into them. This is what we become if we lose, Haurche.

[He lifts his fist and shakes his head as he draws back a step, ready to dodge an attack if he has to.]

We have not yet lost! There is time still to save everyone.

[John lunges, unable to hold back. But he misses when Haurchefant dodges and manages to get ahold of himself again.]
