And listening - that helps? It distracts you?

Mm. [ Royce's noise of agreement is pained, vaguely. ] Don't know for how long. Get restless.

[Then Alfie will try his very best to make that distraction last as long as he can. He launches into a story, and then after that, another one - stories from home, stories of the war (but nothing too brutal, and nothing sad). When he runs out of stories, he'll even sing one of the more light-hearted soldiers' songs that he knows.

If Royce doesn't interrupt, he'll keep it up until he starts nodding off, his speech starting to slur a little.]

[ Royce doesn't interrupt, or at least - he tries not to. He doesn't speak up much - it's hard, and he loses track of his words here and there to the monster brain. But he does listen, and it does make him feel less alone. Less terrified, too. That feeling eases, slowly, as Alfie speaks.

When Alfie starts to nod off, Royce crawls slowly across the floor. It might be a bit startling, since it's the same way he crawled to grab Alfie the first time, but he's much less jittery and tense. He settles down over Alfie's feet, blanket between him and Alfie, and stays there. He's not warm, but he can sort of soak in that warmth the way a blanket does.

He'll stay there quietly for a while, encouraging Alfie to sleep. He doesn't sleep himself, but eventually he's going to have to leave, crawling around the house restlessly, locked in and looking for the lights that aren't there. ]
