Summary: Two teenagers try very hard not to freeze to death.

[Cassel finally makes it to the storage unit minutes before lockdown. It doesn't take long to slip from the grocery store to the little building beside it, but by the time he does, he's already shivering violently. He's wearing a leather jacket and gloves more suited for fall than for winter, and while they cut the wind a bit, it feels like the chill has seeped down into his bones. He isn't used to cold like this, and he'd be lying if he didn't admit that his heart sinks when he sees where they'll be spending the night—a bare concrete floor and an empty, echoing room.

Cassel closes the door behind him and hears the lock engage a moment later, then drops his pack to the ground. He already looks a little ridiculous—there's a pink leopard print cutting cape wrapped around his throat like a scarf, and he's wearing sneakers that certainly weren't made for traipsing around in the snow and the ice. At least he has fresh food.]

[He's about to tell her that she really does not want to know anything about calculus when she hits him with that, and he stops with his mouth halfway open.]

Coronation. Coronation for what?

[The reply is on her lips before she pauses with a small smile.]

I will tell you once you explain calculus to me.

[Priorities.]

[His lips quirk up just slightly, and he can't help the dry response.]

I thought the one upside to freezing to death was not having to think about homework.

Homework?

[The hole grows ever deeper.]

[God, this is so weird Cassel can't help but laugh.]

Schoolwork that you have to finish outside of class.

Your tutors give you subjects to study outside of their lessons? Or - someone mentioned that they learn in a larger group. Is it like that for you as well?

[Strange or not, she seems interested in hearing more about it. It's such a foreign concept to her.]

It's like... one tutor and fifteen kids. More depending on the school you go to.

[Cassel just somehow conned his way into a super nice one.]

They give you work to finish between classes, which everyone hates.

It sounds fascinating. So many people being instructed at once... How did your tutor handle all of your questions?

[A small frown.]

Why would you hate the opportunity to learn more?

It's not—

[God, somehow Adelina makes him feel bad about complaining about homework.]

Sometimes after being in class all day I don't feel like doing French translations for another two hours, you know?

[A small laugh, shaking her head.]

I don't know what French is, either, so I'm afraid not... But, how long did your lessons typically last?

Uh, well... seven hours, and then we have weekends off. Why? What's it like for you?

We spent as much time in lessons, but... It was not things like French or calculus.

[Or at least she assumes it wasn't, since she still has no idea what either is.]

It was more about manners and etiquette, history and diplomacy... Economic policy and proper leadership, military tactics. Then there was how to speak properly in public, as well as decorum. How to ride a horse, the art of needlepoint. Things of that nature.

[He brushes the hair back from his forehead absently.]

So, are you going to tell me about this coronation?

Ah, thank you. [A short pause.] You haven't told me about calculus yet.

[She'll never let go.]

[He scoffs.]

I give you half my life story and that's the response I get.

That was rather short for being half of your life story.

[Just saying.]

[Wow, Adelina!]

What can I say? I like to be concise.

[And now he's just looking at her expectantly.]

[A small sigh. She hasn't given up on her calculus dreams, but she knows that look well, when something is expected of her.]

What sort of coronation do you imagine it was?

If you're a queen, I definitely screwed up on the sleeping arrangements.

[A small noise of disagreement as she shakes her head.]

If you wouldn't have considered it as much of a mistake with anyone else, you shouldn't with me.

[Did he seriously decide to pick a queen as his traveling buddy? Of course he did.]

So you're a humble queen. That's good, because I don't know the proper way to bow or kiss your hand or whatever.

[He's joking.]

Or one with a sense of fairness. Besides... The ceremony hadn't finished yet, so a humble princess may be more accurate still.

[A laugh.]

And that certainly will not be necessary.

Are you sure? I can try. You can critique my form.

[Also, this stupid discussion is way better than thinking about the situation they're actually in, so it's a win-win.]

[The smile on her lips grows a touch more amused.]

Would you like a lesson?

[Cassel sets down his tablet and stands, brushing his gloves off on his jeans.]
