majorlazer: (Zach cheekbones)

Oh. I'd look at a drawing, though. I'm gonna be honest, I'm...struggling...to see what these titans look like. DO they have belly buttons? How are they born? How do you kill them? You got to kill them, right?

I can't believe they just swallow people without having any reason to do so. And like, they all do this stuff? Like a hive mind? Who's leading them? How can they all do this?

[Zach grimaces. Man, he knows, it's stupid, but also. He's attached to his feet and yards.]

Most of the world uses the same. It's just. Historical stuff, we don't like change, where I'm from.

this drawing is a cardinal sin and I'm going to hell

Alright! Just, eh, give me a minute to figure this thing out...

[There's a long wait between this message and the next, as Hange learns how to use the drawing function and how to send images. Eventually Zach is sent titan.jpeg.]

Did that work? I mean, they don't all look like that, but you get the idea. Humans, but with elongated limbs and distorted features. Usually their heads are enlarged. We'll say that one's a ten meter class. I've put a little person in there for reference. And no, they don't seem to have belly buttons. Probably because they aren't really born...

We... have a theory about where they come from... [A HIGHLY DISTURBING theory, but you know. Bizarrely, Hange keeps this part to themself.]

They can be killed, of course, but only by certain means. You have to slice into a very particular section of the body, on the nape of the neck. About where the top of the spinal cord is in a regular human.

As for their reasoning, it's been impossible to talk to them, although I have tried. So there's no way to know for sure. My current theory, and I believe it holds water, is that they're being commanded to do so. As for by whom, we don't yet know. Some of them act in unusual ways- we call these abnormals- and don't always go straight for swallowing people. But overall, their "goal", if you can call it that, seems to be the same: eradicating humanity.

[And on that lovely note.]

I get what you mean, about not liking change. The people where I'm from don't seem to take to it much, either.

That...[Zach takes a moment, looking at the drawing, tilting his head this way and that. Just you wait until he shows Kesara all this.]

So they're grinning all the time? That's so creepy. That's so creepy. [A pause. Zach looks at the drawing some more.]

Okay, they want to kill everyone, but. Imagine they do, right? Then what?

[Zach's been trying to understand the why of a number of things recently. Obviously, this whole tale here, he's not really taking as a real thing. Because it's crazy. And he can't really compute that it is real for someone else, so it just...can't be. Right?

Right. Like ghosts and aliens and anomalies are not real. Why not giant beings that look like humans but then eat them even though they can't digest them nor have a reason to do so. Why not.]

DO you - fight them?

this was slow oops

Oh, well no, they're not grinning all the time. But most of the time, yes. I think that's more of a quality of their mouth structure than an actual emotional expression, but I suppose I don't know that for sure.

After they eat us all... well, I don't plan to let that happen, but since we don't know their reason for attacking us to begin with, we can't exactly speculate on their actions afterwards. Since they don't need us to survive, I guess they'll just continue to wander, like they do when there are no humans nearby.

As for fighting them, of course we do. [Hange makes a quick gesture here: a fist tapped against the right side of their chest, near the shoulder.] That's what the Survey Corps does. I mean, we go outside the walls, so we have no choice but to fight them. It's much easier now that we know how.

If you're asking me personally, then that answer's also yes. I'm a squad leader, so I'm on the front lines rather frequently.

See, what blows my mind is - you just said, they don't need you to survive, so why do they eat you?

[It's just illogical. Zach is used to a world where killing - animals, anyway, which he sort of equates Titans to for some reason - kill for survival. For food.

He should be used to it. Humans, after all, at the worst at this. Kill for all sorts of stupid fucking reasons. But for a race that sounds barely sentient...it's so weird to him.]

You're a soldier? That's good. We totally need more people like you around here, I think. Everything's a mess. That's why I'm staying mostly out of everything - Kesara and I are exploring the tunnels to the east. Hopefully we won't step right into trouble.

[He has a feeling they will, at some point.]
