I'd never seen anything like this before and I was trying to put in my name; Al Elric, but it didn't work so well. I've got a lot better at typing now, but that doesn't help fix the mistakes of before.

If it is any consolation, I think Lelric close enough to Elric that the mistake does not seem too egregious...
Perhaps you could simply tell others that your surname is Lelric?
Unless of course House Elric is a distinguished family, in which case I understand the shame all too well.

a distinguished man from my country is here as well, and
his exploits are well-known enough that even I know of them, but
he seems to have misspelled his own name rather terribly and I confess I feel a touch of secondhand embarrassment for him...

[Al feels bad for this mystery person too now, whoever they are, he understands the pain of the typo all too well. He might not have minded his own mistake too much if it hadn't all been in capital letters too, making the mistake more obvious.]

Elric isn't a distinguished name, though I guess we're relatively well known now that Brother is a State Alchemist, but it's still our name and distinguished or not, I'm still proud of it. Thank you, though, for being kind about it, most people here just laugh at me.
