[When Tifa steps up closer, asks him what's wrong, there's a hollow, sort of cracked laugh that escapes Zach, and he looks up at her. She's still pretty, even with the dirt over her face and the ridiculous layers she's wearing, but Zach doesn't even care at this point.

Who knows who's going to be the next person to betray him, he can't help but think; will it be Tifa? Zach might have tried to keep some kind of face and faith in people when he met Duster the day before, but that was what it was, a face and a need to be contradictory against someone who knows no one in this town yet.

But Zach knows some people now. It's stupid to trust anyone.]

What isn't seems like a better question.

[His voice is softer than it usually is, and he tightens his hold around his knees, looking back down and away. He sighs.]

I'm fine, Tifa. I'm sorry.

[Sorry I was staring. Sorry for being a dick before. Sorry for believing Kesara genuinely liked him. Sorry for leaving Lil T behind. Sorry, sorry, sorry.]

[Zach looks up then, pushes his snapback up enough to show his eyes.]

For all the shit I've given you.

[He's sincere about it, too - maybe being used and played is giving him the need to make some kind of amends, maybe try and avoid getting more shit thrown at him in the future. Maybe, if he's a better person, if he actively tries, then people will remember and he won't be in their sights whenever the next thing blows up in all of their faces.]

I know I've been a dickhead to you, and I don't even....I don't even know why. I want to have a laugh and I never think about what I say, and with you, it always turns into a fight and - I'm so used to fighting.

[He shakes his head. He needs to learn to keep his shit for Terezi, and Nathan, and House, and people who insult him right back. He's done it so much towards Tifa, he knows by now. She doesn't want any of his BS, and that's cool. That's fair.]

But you shouldn't have to take my shit. So. I'm sorry.

[She's still looking at him, and under other circumstances he'd have said a joke right here, because he has no idea what else to say, but. He's just made a point to himself not to, so it wouldn't really do him any good to just launch straight back into it.

But that means - he doesn't know what to say, here. He doesn't know why she's still standing here if that's all she's got for him, sharp words and an even sharper look to her eyes. Zach takes his time to reply, thinking his words through, but it doesn't really help.]

Well...you won't have to? I'll - leave you alone. Won't speak to you, or about you. Whatever you want, okay?

[Somehow, he has a feeling he's still saying the wrong things. He's not entirely sure.]

I'm used to it. [He says the words under his breath, not really loud enough for anyone but himself to hear, especially since he mumbles them into his knees. He's used to disappearing, whenever his brother was around, to avoid being bullied some more. He's used to making himself as invisible as possible at home - possibly part of why he made himself so visible at school.

He's used to it. And here, in Norfinbury...it shouldn't even be that hard to do.]

[God, what a small ask. It'd be easier to avoid talking to her, honestly. It's not that Zach doesn't want to, but...it doesn't come easy to him.

Running a hand over his face, he drags it through his hair, pushing his hat up for a moment before pushing it back firmly on his head.]

The best I can do is try.

[He wants to say, maybe she could try and be more understanding with him, too, not lash out at every joke like it's so offensive all the time. Yeah, sure, he says offensive shit sometimes, but he can't help and feel like she's got a grudge the size of Texas against him, and it's not entirely warranted.

Oh, well. He doesn't really want to start all over again, though, so he says nothing. Sure, take the blame, Zach, you're the worst person ever, Zach, never forget that nobody likes you, Zach.

He's used to it.]
