1946redvelvet: (proper pinup perfection)

@besame, video

Yes, why? Do you know him? [Steve seems to be a well-known figure around Norfinbury. Peggy still isn't sure if it is in a good or bad way.]

The weather is clear but I have limited visibility. From discussing it with other people it seems I am fairly close to the school, towards the North wall, indeed, but I can't confirm my exact surroundings, besides the pool in the backyard of the house I woke into.

[In the interest of fairness, Beckett switches on his own video function. He looks at her with clear, if reserved interest.]

We've travelled together for a time. You're one of the new arrivals, I take it? [Confirming his hunch, before asking direct questions, seems better.]

I'm reasonably sure there are no pools in the houses south of the school, so north is your best bet. If you travel some distance south you may be able to spot it - it's a very useful landmark. One of the few favours we get here.

[When he appears on video, Peggy raises an eyebrow of surprise. He's - very pale, and looks very imposing. She doesn't know what she was expecting, but he is - not it, for sure.]

I am - this is my fourth day here.

I can travel south to another house, which I can see from the one I'm in right now. Maybe I'll get a better view of things from here, although I can see the wall now.

[With a shaky grip, Peggy turns the tablet around to film her surroundings; she's stepped outside the door. From here, she can definitely see the wall.]

I see. [He inclines his head slightly in greeting. For such fresh meat, she seems to have it quite well together. It makes sense that she and Steve would get along.] And has the good Captain Rogers been your welcome committee? He is just the type. Very heroic. [His tone is wry, but not harsh or hostile. He... does still respect Steve. Somehow.]

The wall and the school should orient you. Although of course that depends on where you want to go.If your priority is not to be alone, I think I may not be far from your location - perhaps even with the day's travel.

[At the mention of welcome committee, Peggy blushes furiously. Steve has been a lot more than that already, but - she composes herself, clearing her throat.] Steve's been helping me, yes. And, trust me, he is most definitely a hero.

[Peggy could embark on explaining exactly what makes Steve a hero - the countless lives he'd saved, the sacrifices he'd made, but she has a feeling there is no need. She wonders what the relationship between Steve and this man is.]

I am not sure yet - I'm waiting for Steve to make plans. But I could definitely go to the nearby house, if you want to join me there. Better not to be alone around these parts, right?

[The blush certainly contributes to the confirmation that he is probing for. Humans, even the most collected ones, can be so obvious with their cues. It seems a good time to ask outright.] I get the sense that you've known him before - in your own world.

[The hint of amusement is gone now. His face turns carefully neutral. The reason he'd asked to begin with... it isn't for Steve's sake. A face familiar to anyone turning up in Norfinbury is a rare occasion, and he isn't sure how he feels about what it might imply.]

And that would depend on whom you ask. But I can spare time for company. I'll be heading west. If my guess is right, we should run into each other not far from the school's northeastern corner.

I - [After a long, drawn-out sigh, Peggy lets her shoulders drop. She doesn't know exactly why she's struggling with telling some people about having known Steve for years.] Yes. Steve and I were friends, back home. Why do you ask?

[Nodding, Peggy starts gathering her things. Depend on whom you ask, yeah, isn't surprising. She has a feeling this town is full of people who'd rather be alone.]

All right, Mr -? I don't know your name.

[Why does he ask? He has the obvious reason, but he knows there is more to it, and it isn't the kind of thing you can rightly hide. He can try, though, considering she clearly has other worries.] There aren't many instances of people from the same place meeting here. Anything might be a clue. You'll understand the mentality soon enough. [He says it almost lightly. The in-jokes of the damned.]

My name is Beckett. Miss - ?

Carter. Peggy Carter. Nice to meet you, Beckett. I look forward to meeting you in the flesh soon!
