[He was not particularly fond of the fact that these devices could broadcast videos but hey it could come in handy at times. Such as this. On the screen was a bunch of snow but above that snow was a small, black card that resembled an SD card for the tablet being held tentatively between forefinger and thumb. Max had no idea what the thing was for but he took it with him anyway. A quick search of his tablet had found a slot where it might fit. But was that a good idea?]

What does it do?

[The gruff voice was short, to the point, and did not bother to clarify any more than that.]

He doesn't give a name back. It's kinda obvious anyway. (If asked, he'd say the device defaulted to his name. Which it did.)]

Nothing of interest.

[Well, he had some snow boots for a young teenager that he was carrying around but there was no need to mention that if he couldn't get them to anyone, right?]

If you do find anything, make sure to let everyone know. The only way we're going to really find anything out, is by pooling all our information.

[He doesn't mean to lecture, he's just so earnest in his desire for everyone to work as one cohesive team.]

[He grunts an acknowledgement.]

much later that night

[After lock-down Max finally decides to take the risk of inserting the SD card into his tablet device. He watches the video a few times before deliberately knocking the tablet far away from himself.

A voice taunts him in his mind, whispering accusations and demands for his absence.

Later, he carefully picks the device back up. There are no words from him but the road warrior sends out a downloadable file to everyone that showed interest in what he had found. The file contains a video.]

[Al sits riveted as the video plays, and then scrambles to save it to his own device. He watches it through a second and then a third time, before he finally deigns to answer.]

This is what happened when you plugged that thing in?

[Are these like the diaries of this world?]

Yes. [A small pause and then:] It was the only thing on there.

[armoured]

I wonder what it means.

[There's the muted sound of it playing again in the background as Al speaks.]

Was there anything else near it when you found it?

[Not a clue, kiddo.

For a moment the line was silent but the feed not dead or absent. Simply Max considering his answer whether to answer or not before he finally concedes.]

The family's discarded belongings. Junk. [Possibly protest materials but Max was uninterested in that and...really didn't think about mentioning the specifics.]

I don't know if anything here can be considered junk. Even what might seem like useless household items could be interesting to note down, in case there's a pattern to the things left behind and the things taken when people left.

[Al has so much hope that it even extends to random household crap.]

[Hesitantly at first, and almost a bit grumpily, he clarifies.]

Things stuffed in a basement. Old furniture. Discarded children's items. Posterboard and paint.

[How that may even remotely help he does not know nor care. But there's your list of things, Al. To him, they were just things easily left behind in a hurry...]

[He's genuinely grateful, even if he's aware Max sounded reluctant as hell.]

I'll let you know if I find anything in return, okay?

Hm. [An affirmative.]

[armoured]

[He pauses, well aware by this point in the conversation that he's not speaking with someone very social. But he can't just hang up without one last gesture of friendship.]

[Then he hangs up.]
