I was stabbed repeatedly through the hands and had my tongue cut out the second time I was murdered. I fought the bastard to the end and I'm pretty sure I broke a few bones. He also cut part of my ear off another time. I brought a shower rod down on his head. Think I can manage, Mikey. Spite keeps me going.

[Mycroft's slightly suspicious at that, sure House, but he's bored and frightened and it gives him something to do anyway.]

Everybody breaks eventually. Well, according to the manuals. I've seen someone resist...most legal methods...and he revealed nothing. For most non-psychopaths, everyone breaks. The sooner one accepts that, the sooner one can stop being afraid of it, and has a chance to prepare for the eventuality. Everyone has pressure points. If they can find that, they can make you do anything.

[Sherlock isn't here, so Mycroft is relieved about that.]

Technically information retrieved upon duress can be compromised or unusable, however I doubt they're trying to extract information from us. Whatever they're going to do, it's probably going to try to 'convert' us. Which means that they're likely to use both positive and negative motivators. There'll be pain, then a kindness. I'm sure you've heard of Stockholm Syndrome. It's basically the same thing. The human body and mind can only withstand so much, and they'll be there to swoop in with the positive motivator when we are too weak to resist it.

I doubt they're bound by any international law, so I'd expect anything goes. Some of the more common ones could range anywhere from waterboarding, to sleep deprivation, boredom, isolation...to any litany of things. A drop of water dripping on a person's eye for so long can drive him mad.

What if I'm a bored insomniac who likes being alone? [All of that actually sounds horrible, but House can continue pretending to be flip about it.]

Well, maybe you'll have a decent time of it then.

[He knows all about using gallows humor during trying times. Both him and Sherlock included.]

Maybe. [He drops some of the attitude.] So what do you do when you do break?

[holmesice]

Hope that whatever information that you leak is already irrelevant.

The trick is to last as long as you can without breaking. And considering they're likely not after information, the only thing we can do is hold on until we're A. rescued or B. foiled whatever plans they originally had for us.

[House is silent for a long moment before saying:] If I break before you. I need you to try to kill me.

I would rather not end someone in cold blood. [He nearly had to before, and the man took matters into his own hands and ended up killing himself--no, he couldn't...at least, not personally, not with his own two hands.]

Ask someone else, I'm sure there's loads of volunteers.

[The retort stings worse than Mycroft expected it to be. He did feel guilty over the Governor's death, even though if presented with the same situation he'd probably make the exact same choice. He could not allow himself to get his hands dirty, even if he's ordered other people to do unscrupulous things.

He huffily glares out of the cell, soon to be lost in his own thoughts.]
