[Seriously intense stuff, he says. Sgrub qualifies, Karkat supposes, but it had never involved anything like this. Maybe whoever the fuck is talking had been through something similar, but where does that leave him? And what about Davesprite?]

[He's quiet for a moment, then takes a deep breath.]

[Billy. It's a... normal sort of name for humans, isn't it? Fuck, he doesn't know. He'd have to ask, but he's sure he's seen it before. Somewhere.]

[More importantly, it's a normal conversation. He needs something normal.]

Stephen makes a disgusted noise. "Right," he agrees, obviously displeased with the notion. "Remind me that when I get back to New York I've got a couple things to add to my to-do list as far as checking for other sorcerers around town."

Oh, ye of little faith. I very much doubt we were brought here to starve. No - [he shakes his head, growling a little.] It looks more like the very dullest theory was right. We're due for some experimenting.

[ Disgruntled by his continued failure to get the damned hospital gown off, he flops down on the floor. ]

There is nothing we can do about it for the time being but wait.

And wait, and wait!

[He is not terribly good with regulating his emotions right now, and his primary emotion is anger. Forgive him pounding a fist against the wall.]

Whatever comes for us, I am going to break one of its limbs first, then hold the others hostage for some answers.

[ The Cat just watches, unimpressed. Beckett can't be in his right mind if he thinks he'll be able to escape using force. How does he think they got them all here? ]

You have very little patience, for one so old.

"Probably not a bad idea, especially if you move in those kind of circles," Rhys agrees. "I mostly kept my head down, but some of the things people tried to hire me to do? Bad shit."

There's probably some funny stories in there somewhere, but Rhys isn't quite feeling it. He sighs, and glances back over at Stephen. "So, New York, huh? I just moved to Boston."

[Not at all in his right mind, and even more frustrated by that.]

I've been patient with this place for months. I'll take this damned gown if it brings me someone to properly interrogate.

"I just moved to Greenwich Village," Stephen echoes, but he won't elaborate much further than that. He basically told Dorian everything about his position in the order a day or two ago, but that was while he had no control over what was coming out of his mouth. No need to share the details of his life with the entire cell block. "I've lived in Manhattan a long time, though."

The Village. That's a world away from Rhys's existence, a tiny, mostly concrete loft in the industrial side of the city.

He sighs, shaking his head with a mournful look. "Sounds nice. I was thinking about moving north if work didn't get better. Then, well, this." He shrugs, then looks down at the carpet, suddenly fascinated with the stray threads.

He hadn't really been planning anything, but it sucked to realize that.

"In my world, Central Park's supposed to have one of the highest concentrations of supernatural creatures in the Northeast, y'know."

There. That's a more comfortable topic.

[ The Cat begins cleaning a paw. He continues to be unimpressed. ]

Months? Whole lifetimes... for a house fly.

[Rhys gives a small, quiet laugh.]

If you worked for the government, running into walls was part of your job description, huh?

[He shakes his head, and looks at the bars again.]

If it's a hallucination, it's the best one I've ever seen. Real quality stuff.

[He taps the bar, listening to the dull ringing of the metal under his fingers.]

So this is special even for this place, huh?

Don't condescend to me. You are a literal animal. [He's well aware that the Cat is much more. But he's angry.] A moment ago you were frustrated about being dressed up like a doll.

[ Billy scrubs his hands with his face and shakes his head. ]

[ The thing is, it's been long enough that Billy's almost to the point where he's no longer bracing himself. He's almost to the point that he can just say that to a new person without feeling his heart trip over itself. There's a lot of distance between the bullied kid he'd been in sophomore year and the adult he is now.

But he still notices the pause, and he's wary of it, even if there's no reason to be. H doesn't say anything, though, just takes the question. ]

First you wait for a time-traveler from the 30th century to show up and ask if you want to be an Avenger...

[It's a smooth enough transition that Davesprite doesn't think anything of it other than to be glad it wasn't awkward. It helps that the answer is genuinely interesting, and his eyebrows lift appreciatively.]

Thirtieth century? Teddy isn't his real name, is it? It doesn't sound like the kind of thing a time traveling alien from the far-flung future would be called.

[A scoff.] "Disrespectful" to burgers? He once put a burger on my head thinking it would cure me when I had fallen ill. [That is very disrespectful in England's opinion.]

Such has become the case within the past few centuries, yes. [Also, weird language stuff, which has brought them such fun redundancies as "chai tea."] The plant itself is native to Asia, but it's so popular now that it's cultivated in many other places.
