Dammit! There's got to be something...oops!

[ Despite what it sounds like, this isn't an accident. Sheena just happened to turn on the Audio function just as something happens--the sounds of which can be heard as something falls to the floor. ]

Hello everyone. This is Sheena, and I'm in the Police Station. Again. [ Seriously? That place again, so far from where she had been? Why not the chapel? Or the hospital? No, she has to wake up in the farthest place from her last destination possible. ] But dammit, I'm going to make it to the Pass this time. [ Or else. ]

Right after I get some coffee. [ Great hint as to which way she's traveling. ] I'm getting a late start, but after I'm done here, [ A jingling sound can be heard--along with an "Ah-ha!" Handcuffs: get. ] I'm headed to the card store then the restaurant for coffee then working my way back up north.

[ There's a pause. ]

I've also gone through the network posts, and can someone tell me: Is it true? Has it been ten days?

[ Since she died? ]

Whoa! You're pretty far away. [ Oh, there are more important things to say! ] Are you hurt or missing anything?

Tell me about it. [ Exasperated? Yep. ] This isn't the first time this place has done it to me, either. Remember when we were all switched around? Yeah, I was moved far from where I had originally been then, too.

[ That's okay, Zell. She's trying not to dwell on a few things. ]

I'm not hurt, and I'm in one piece. [ She knows there are other ways to miss something, but she's going to stall for now. ]

Maaan, your luck sucks. When were switched around we wound up on closer to where we wanted to go. [ Most of them at least. Kunsel ended pretty far. ]

That's good you aren't hurt. Any idea what might be missing?

Tell me about it. [ A pause, and wow are her eyes narrowing right now in mock anger. ] Seriously? Maybe I should start traveling with you. Then again, knowing my luck...

[ She lets that hang. No sense in fully jinxing herself right now.

And dang it, Zell. You're making it hard for her to stall. ]

Well...yeah. Sorta. Do you remember when some people couldn't feel the cold? Zelos even started making a video of himself stripping outside?

You wouldn't want to hang with us. My luck has been falling through holes or monsters chasing us.

[ His tone is joking, but there is some truth to that. ]

Huh? Oh yeah. I remember that... [ He was trying so hard to forget about that dude getting naked in the snow. ]

[ Sheena starts laughing. ]

You too? I thought I was the only one who fell into holes--both here and at home!

[ She's not joking, but her laughter slows and stops. ]

Luckily, he didn't get too far. [ Unluckily, he got frostbite. ] But that's kind of what's happening to me. I can't feel the cold.

Or anything.

Yeah! I wasn't like this at home, but this place really wants to give my friends a heart attack.

[ More specifically Jim a heart attack. ]

Whoa! That's pretty serious. Anyone you can meet up with down there?

Well, what it wants and what it gets are two different things, right?

[ Her tone is still light, but she's basically saying "neener" to this place for not getting to them by now. ]

Umm... I don't think so. [ At least, no one's contacted her about it. ]

Besides, I'd probably just slow them down, since I have to keep looking at my feet and making sure I haven't hit anything.

Yeah, pretty much.

[ This place seems to want his life and he hasn't died yet! ]

I don't think you have to worry too much about your feet. It's like riding a bike, right? Your body will remember. [ Though he had a hard time when he lost his senses... ]

[ Lucky him... Maybe House is taking up empty slots... ]

Well, it's not really moving my legs I'm worried about. It's running into something. [ She pauses. ] Or stepping on something that can cut me. [ She may be bleeding and never feel it. ] As far I as I can tell, however, that hasn't happened, though.

You just have to have a little faith! If you worry too much about that, you might miss something else happening.

[He's doing his best to sound confident! ]

If you need help, you can always call someone up to be an extra pair of eyes for you. These things are pretty handy for that. [ Tapping the tablet for emphasis. ]

[ ooc: I know this is old, so I'd understand if you want to drop. :) ]

True. But If I don't worry about something like that, then things may be worse for me. [ She sighs. ] Not exactly the best situation to be in here, is it? [ She chuckles. ] At least I'm not taking my jacket and things off.

[ She tilts her head in thought. ]

I didn't think about that, but wouldn't that cause someone else to miss something?

Sheena...

[There's relief in his voice, but it's underpinned with a heck of a lot of grief. He's so tired, he doesn't know how much longer he can do this.]

Do you-- do you have to sound so matter of fact? Like you just went away for a few days?!

Al...

[ She switches to private. ]

Al... I'm sorry. I just don't want people to worry about me, that's all. [ So, if she sounds and acts fine, that means they won't. At least, that's what she keeps telling herself--even after being called out on it SO many times. ]

But, do you want to know the truth? [ A pause; this is a sign of how much she trusts you, Al. ] I'm scared. [ And her voice has a tremor to it that says she's not lying. ]

That's not for you to decide! [He still sounds a little angry.] People who care about you have a right to worry, and you shouldn't pretend like this was nothing at all.

[He huffs, but his voice does get softer.]

Do you... do you know what you've lost?

[ Surprise at his outburst keeps her quiet for a few moments. ]

Sorry, Al. It's a habit I got into when I was a kid, and it's a very hard one to break after 12 or 13 years. [ Putting up a brave front is pretty much second nature to her by now. She does it almost without realizing it.

Her voice softens, too. ]

Yeah. I know exactly what I've lost. [ A beat, and it's obvious she's trying to fight down the panic in her voice. ] I can't feel anything.

What do you mean you can't feel anything?

[He'll leave the other issue, she's apologised and he doesn't want to keep retreading old ground.]

You mean like-- if you got hit, you wouldn't feel it?

That's exactly what I mean. I can't feel the cold, or if I get hit, or if I get cut.

Right now, I have to keep looking to make sure I'm holding on to the tablet.

[ Any wonder she's scared and that fear is showing in her voice. ]

[Not being able to feel is something he knows intimately, though not here, and he knows how horrifying it is.]

You-- you won't have to deal with it for long, Sheena, it's always temporary. Just try to remember that and stay strong.

[ If she could, she'd give you a hug, Al, but the distance in this place just won't let her. ]

Martel, I hope so. And that it's short. I seem to get these long payments for some reason. [ She hasn't spoken to John yet, so the "why" hasn't occurred to her. And yes, she's mad and frustrated about that. ]

Have you tried asking the admin about it?

[She doesn't always give answers about things like that, especially things related to revival, but it's worth a try.]

You know, I thought about doing that after talking to Dr. Watson, but only if this one lasts as long as... Well, only if it lasts long.

[ No need to jump the gun, here. ]

If it does, she's definitely getting the question.

Yeah... yeah, okay.

[He doesn't really know what she's talking about.]

You've talked to Dr. Watson about how long these last?

Oh no. I meant I've talked to him about talking to ADMIN. Did you know he speaks to her pretty often? Usually about medical issues.

This, to me, would definitely be a medical issue.

No, I didn't know. But we don't talk that often, Dr. Watson and I don't really get along.

[Meaning that he's a giant jerkface.]

Oh. Well, I can't blame you for not knowing. Until he announced it, I had no clue, either. Guess that's not exactly something you want to advertise.

[ She pauses. ]

Why don't you get along with him? If you don't mind me asking.

I don't mind.

[There's a slightly embarrassed pause, however.]

He treats me like I'm just a kid, he won't let me help out where it's important and where I could do some good.

[ Sheena sighs knowingly. Guess who else he's tried to do that to, as well? ]

Yeah, he's kind of protective. I'm not sure if it has to do with him being a doctor, or if things are a little different where he's from.

People learn to fight at a very young age on my world. [ She pauses. ] You know, I never asked, I just thought... Is that the same where you're from?

[ She had figured it was since they had both adapted to survival pretty quickly when they arrived. ]

No, not really.

[Most kids are allowed to be kids, most kids go to school and grow up in the loving care of their families.]

My brother and I just didn't get much of a choice, we were kind of on our own by the time I was four.

Really? I thought--

[ She's cut off by his next comment, and for a moment, she's left speechless. ]

I'm sorry, Al. I didn't know. Were you... Were you able to find someone to help you?

[ She's asking nicely if anyone took them in. ]

[Her sympathy takes him by surprise, he sometimes forgets how very unusual their lives have been.]

Yeah. Our friend Winry and her Granny took us in for a while, and then we went travelling together to learn more about alchemy.

[ooc: Sorry for the wait, I've been on holiday with no internet for a few days.]

[ He should know her well enough not to be surprised. She likes kids and hurts for them when she hears things like that. ]

Well that's good. How old were you when you started traveling?

[ ooc: No Problem! And look at the even you had come back to! LOL ]

I think I was about six.

[Which is totally a normal time for children to go out into the world on their own.]

We didn't come back to Resembool, that's where I'm from, until I was ten. We learned a lot in that time.

Six? How old was your brother?

[ Totally normal! Because you know, she did it, too. ]

Fours years? That's a long time. What did you learn about? And did you stay with your friends again?

Brother is a year older than me.

[Was, not is. Ed is dead now, he can't keep slipping up like that.]

Uh-- We went to learn about alchemy, and we did stay with Granny and Winry again when we made it back. For a couple of years, at least, then we went travelling again.

He was seven and you were six when you started? [ A sad chuckle. ] Seems we have a lot in common.

[ Oh, Al. Sheena had meant time-wise. She's seriously going to give you a hug whenever she meets you. ]

Alchemy? Isn't that a science of some kind? [ Yeah, she's not too science-y. ] Though, it sounds like those two were more like family than just "friends".

Mm.

[It's easier to focus on the question about alchemy, there's less pain in there.]

Alchemy is the science of deconstructing and reconstructing matter, it's all about changing the chemical composition of something and turning it into something else.

[ She won't push, Al. ]

Wait, what? You can take something apart and put it back together as something else? How in the name of Martel do you do that?

It's all about knowing the chemical composition of both things and then using the transmutic power of tectonic plates and your own skill to change it. It's something I've been learning for a long time now.

[ Her eyes are a little bit glazed over right now. ]

Ummm...could you explain that to me again? I'm not exactly sure what tectontic plates are.

[ ooc: Yes, she's mispronouncing the word. :D ]

[He chuckles, though it's still a bit muted given the situation.]

A tectonic plate is what's under the crust of the earth, sometimes when they shift together they make earthquakes. It's an immensely powerful force, and alchemists harness that power in Amestris to perform their transmutations.

[ Sometimes a chuckle helps. ]

is that what causes earhtquakes? I wonder if Gnome uses those from time to time. But I still don't understand how the power of Earth helps you change things.

It's hard to explain without being able to demonstrate, and I think... you need to get going.

[It's not that he doesn't want to talk to her, it's just that she said she was getting a late start and she needs to move if she wants to get to shelter for the night.]

But I'll tell you all about it another time, okay?

[ Sheena glances at the time, and makes a "whoops" sound. ]

I didn't realize it was getting so late.

[ Everything goes out the window when it comes to Sheena's friends--even time. ]

I'm going to hold you to that, Al. I'll talk to you later. Take care of yourself, okay?

[ And she signs off. ]
