Summary: Far too many people descend on a fast food joint for supplies.

[A fast food restaurant. The exact details of the brand are missing, but it sells fairly standard fare: hamburgers, french fries, chicken nuggets, soda... Sadly, it seems like they don't have milkshakes or ice cream, but sometimes they have coffee! This place is regularly stocked with food, so no one can stay here overnight. "ALPHONSE ELRIC, DAY ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY THREE, TRAVELLING NORTH, IF ANY ASSISTANCE IS REQUIRED CONTACT @LELRIC ANY TIME" is written on one of the walls. "ALPHONSE ELRIC, DAY ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY TWO, CONTACT @LELRIC FOR ANY ASSISTANCE." is written on the wall.]

It's fine. [It's not really fine, but John's going to push it all back down and just offer her a tired smile.]

So, where are you and the others headed after this? We're off to the fire station to see the anomaly there.

[phaseshifter]

Well, the first stop will be the food store downtown. Then we're heading for Alfie to help him out with something, and after that I... think we're going north? We're kinda trying to avoid anomalies for a while.

Fair enough. What's 'something' for Alfie? Or is he being cagey about it?

[phaseshifter]

Uh, I know what it is he wants. Iunno if he wants it to be common knowledge, though.

[ She sips at her coffee again - without grimacing, this time! WOW - and considers this. Alfie never said it was a secret. And he and John are friends. Hrrrm. ]

So if it doesn't go further than us, I can tell you. I'm going to need you to promise to keep it secret, though - you know how Alfie is.

[John raises his brows and weighs his options there. Alfie is a very private man. Their early rows had centered around John being too nosy. But if it doesn't get back to him...]

I can keep a secret from him, no problem. What is it?

[phaseshifter]

From him and others, geez! I'm helping him make a gun.

[ AND ISN'T SHE THE MOST EXCITED ABOUT IT ]

Not a great one, obviously. We were talking about killing anomalies, and I said with a bicycle pump and my own supplies I could make a pretty basic airgun. You only get one shot with it before you have to reload via the pump, but it'll be pretty powerful. Neat, right?

[He stares at her for a long moment, then promptly sets down his coffee, pulls off his pack, and rummages in it to pull out a bicycle pump.]

D'you have enough supplies for two? I'll trade you whatever you'd like.

[phaseshifter]

You want one too? I - geez. I have some spare supplies! But we may already have to scavenge a large valve from the remains of Rhys' arm and you have a freaking bike pump. Where'd you get that? Were there more?

[ she shrugs off her own backpack, removes a roll of macaroni-patterned duct tape and a glass shard wrapped in bits of yellow cloth, and begins using the latter to slice the roll of tape in half to create two thinner rolls. She may be a bit of a wimp, but the glass is sharp enough for her to make considerable headway while she's talking. ]

I can give you my spares and some instructions, there's no need to trade me anything. You'll need a water bottle, the valve from a bike tyre, a larger valve - around the size of the bottle neck? - and some patience.

Also you can totally talk with Alfie about this after all because he might need to borrow your pump.

I got it in the school shed. It was the only one there I found, though. Happy to share it with him. This is great, Angel! God, I've missed my gun.

[Even if it's a very, very poor man's gun, it's a gun.]

Not really sure where I'll find the other valves, but I'll keep an eye out. Maybe we'll run into a bicycle shop soon.

You only had one? You Earth people are so freaking weird.

[ she finishes cutting the duct tape - not too neatly, but hush - and offers both it and the large shard of glass. Carefully. It really is very sharp. ]

Basically, you take your bottle and poke a hole in the larger end - small enough to snugly fit your bike valve. Work the larger valve into the bottle neck, and seal everything up with tape so there are no air leaks. Then you can pump air into the bottle via the bike valve to increase the internal air pressure, right? And release that pressure by opening the bigger valve when you want to fire.

Ideally, you'll have something you can tape to the end of your big valve to work as a barrel. The longer the better, but the neck of another bottle will do in a pinch? It might get shredded when you fire, though, so piping is better if you can get it. And for bullets, you want little bits of rubble. Or even chips off the glass I gave you? That's window glass, so it should work pretty great against the anomalies.

Oh, and since it won't be super accurate I recommend loading several smaller bullets into your barrel instead of one bigger one. Go for the whole shotgunny buckshot thing.

[Well, it was sort of illegal for him to have that one at all, Angel. John's just going to skip over mentioning that, though.]

Hah! You're a clever girl. I'm sure you hear that a lot, but it bears repeating.

I do hear it a lot, yes. Mostly from Beckett, who gets away with calling me a girl because he's a million years old. Give or take a few decades.

[ She rolls her eyes, but clearly isn't actually offended. What with the beaming and all. ]

Oh, c'mon! I'm old enough to be your dad. I can do a few jokes if that helps. Vampire dad jokes, even. What kind of dog does a vampire have?

A blood hound!

[phaseshifter]

Dude. Before you start trying to dad at me, consider my track record when it comes to being involved in the deaths of my fathers.

 

That is a weird sentence to say out loud.

It's a weird sentence to listen to. Did you have something to do with Beckett's death that I wasn't aware of, though?

[phaseshifter]

Beckett isn't my dad either, you goof. Is this what Davesprite was talking about? Is the dadding now spreading to the point where prospective dads are now nominating each other to positions of dadliness? Because I'd like to unsubscribe from the dadding program.

Well, then I'm not sure where this over-abundance of dads you've helped murder is, Angel. If you've just got the one, after all...

There are two separate versions of Handsome Jack, John. Unfortunately. Both of them count.

That's two, and they're the same person. I think I can chance it with you. [He winks.] Mind, I think you've got a decent head on your shoulders, anyway. Could stand for a good shake now and again, but couldn't we all?
