In the tunnels. Her tunnels. We couldn't even get her body out. One second she was fine, the next she was crushed. We were standing a few feet away from her and we still couldn't do a damned thing.

Zack... just has to take a moment to compose himself. To blow out a breath and... hell, try to keep himself steady. Bad enough how he feels hearing all of this but to have been witness to it? To feel completely helpless, unable to do anything?

A year and a half ago I watched my best friend's house burn to the ground with her inside.

You get used to it.

You learn to live with it eventually, yeah. But I can't say you ever get used to it.

[ Whether comrades he'd only known briefly through the same roots of ShinRa to fellow cadets he'd grown together with... to dear friends he'd lost in Wutai, to monsters, to clones, or taken by his own hands.. ]

And you sure as hell wanna blame yourself. But it's not your fault, Steph.

[ At least he likes to think she knows him enough by now to know he wouldn't be so callous. Either way, it's an argument that serves no point in the end. It won't change what happened or her feelings on things, will it. ]

Like Zell said, we'll check out the chapel. It's on our way anyway.

[ By which he means they already passed it, but they can backtrack. This is good reason enough, even if it feels like it could be hopeless in the end. ]

[Kesara. Proud, resolute little child. They'd barely spoken, even less so after the accidental "betrayal", where his temporary illiteracy had coaxed something close to her out of her. Where his every attempt to make amends only seemed to make things worse, and then he'd had one of those breakdowns, the ones that felt like a waking nightmare, he still had no idea what to call them...she had seen it the whole time, what right did he have to worry a child so?

And now that child is gone. He'd wanted to say something else. Anything. But what comes out doesn't immediately sound like it's about Kesara at all.]

Nobody deserves this, her least of all.
