[network] backdated to 014 @Mayrora - something's wrong, go cut someone's head off [OPEN/FILTERED]

[CLOSED TO AL - AFTERNOON DAY 014]

[Hearing things was such a common horror trope. Hijikata knew this, and yet he'd given himself over to it twice already. Searching the school, hearing 'footsteps' and thinking he was just getting sucked into the damn creepy atmosphere by odd jobs' abhorrent and obvious state of thinly veiled terror had been the first instance. Easy enough to write off.

The song that wafted gently from the network in the morning had been the second. He'd been so lost in memories of home, of sitting and cleaning his sword or even filling out endless paperwork, that he hadn't thought to attribute it to more than just melody with long forgotten lyrics that was stuck in his head.
Then odd jobs heard it too. Somehow. They were annoyingly similar, but this was drawing the damn line. Hijikata clapped his hands - silence. Insulted the weather girl to be met with a barrage of soundless protesting from Gintoki.

The song got louder.]

Do you hear the music?
[This guy already knew he was deaf, but revealing information that would make him sound crazy would have to wait.]

[OTA - NIGHT DAY 014]

[He could no longer attribute his headache to odd jobs. He could no longer attribute the aching behind his eyes to a bright day or to nicotine withdraw. Hijikata sat with his head leaning against the cool wall of the structure they'd taken refuge in and held his eyes shut.

Not that it helped.

Every moment a buzzing, swirling sensation of ache and pain jerked him away from any coherent thoughts. All he could focus on was killing it.

Whatever 'it' was.

It was in the room with them. It was causing all of this trouble. It didn't have any damn answers, it was just there to watch. To drive it's gaze into his and everyone else's heads. Kill it and the music would stop. The music that couldn't be real, yet it was. In everyone's heads, and somehow enticing them all to believe it was from the tablet.

But that was impossible.]

Someone smash a head in and see if there's anything weird inside. An alien implant, the black hole created by a tendency to be a useless member of society. Anything.

Because this music is just in our heads.

[I - Cafeteria - DAY 012]

[Hijikata ripped a drawer from it's shelf and didn't even notice the lack of a clatter. Not that he'd grown used to being deaf - and communication with Gintoki hadn't exactly improved - but he was on a mission. A very, very important mission.

Packing food away in his backpack and pillow case was pressing, yes, but-

A school cafeteria was bound to have mayonnaise. There was no school on the planet that didn't, and this one had been so lovingly stocked with everything else, so why not the most important part of a meal!?
There would be no excuse. No rest! Until he found his tiny taste of heaven.

Odd jobs had split from him, the two working to cover as much space as possible. Hjikata didn't know how far the idiot had gone, so instead of raising his voice and calling for the man only to NOT hear whatever annoyed response came to test his patience, he went straight for his tablet.]

Tell me if you find any mayonnaise. If I find out you didn't I'll smash any strawberry milk I come across.

Use video if you have to.

[II - DAY 013 placeholder]

[III - MORNING DAY 014]

[Waking up at 7am wasn't new for the vice-chief. He was one of the few members of the Shinsengumi who actually rose early enough to match there documentary-advertised public image. That habit hadn't wavered in this snowy wasteland. If anything, he'd been waking up earlier - only allowing himself a few hours of sleep each night.

Take turns. Keep watch. That whole idea only worked if the other party wasn't an idiotic blind horrible excuse for a samurai.

There was no window to check their surroundings, so Hijikata moved to stand in the doorway. Odd jobs was asleep, of course. Nevermind that the flow of cold air might make him too cold for comfort.

Nevermind any of that, because there was a search light!?

Hijikata's heart jumped and he turned from the door immediately. Delivering a swift kick to Gintoki's side, he didn't watch his volume as he hoped to have shouted.]
Wake up! We're leaving. NOW!

[IV - NIGHT DAY 014]

Someone smash a head in...because this music is just in our heads

[Hijikata wanted to do it himself, but attacking his only company would end poorly. Worst case he'd be defeated and killed. Best case he'd be stopped and Gintoki would gloat about how they were even now. They needed to be even now. Work together-

Was it that desperate?

Yes.]

Gintoki. Listen to me. [He assumed the other would take the use of his name as indication of Hijikata's seriousness and continued.] Something's in here with us. In this room or- [In our heads.] I'll give you a weapon. Let's kill it.

[Al is startled when a message flashes up just for him, and he can't help the sudden and uncharacteristic paranoia that it's because Hijikata is spying on him somehow. It takes him a moment to squash down the fear and reply.]

Yes, I do.

[Stupid Norfinbury paranoia has startled him enough that the implications of this take a moment to sink in.]

Wait, how are you hearing it?

[He's not sure what this could mean, but it makes the whole thing infinitely more unnerving. He doesn't dismiss it as impossible, though, not after facing a couple of impossible truths himself, such as being forced to eat here despite not having his original body back.]

...Can you hear this?

[He hesitates for a few seconds after speaking, before adding in a text reply when nothing seems forthcoming.]

I just spoke to you, did you really not hear it? Can you hear the music now?

I think it's real, everyone I've spoken to has been able to hear it. But if you're hearing it too, then it's probably not audible in the way that I was thinking. Maybe it's somehow psychological? An implant of thought into our heads, rather than an external source?

[He's really just hypothesising blindly, but a deaf person being able to hear the music has intrigued him so deeply that he's able to ignore the worry for a short while.]
