We were hired for a case dealing with someone breaking into a bank and spray painting a symbol across one of the top bloke's office. That led into a whole mess where we had to deal with a crime syndicate that was dealing in stolen antiquities. In my world, China's a country that's very difficult to travel from. The syndicate was using a circus as a front for their operations. It meant that the people part of the gang had some... interesting skill sets. One of them included swordsmanship.

Not quite. Sherlock's a consulting detective. I'm his assistant. I was in the Army before that, but I was a member of the combat corps, not the medical corps. Acted as a field medic for my division, but I was part of the combat operations.

Anyway, he helps out the police when they need it for their murder investigations. We take other cases that clients bring us, usually things the police don't want anything to do with, or missing items, or weird things they don't understand, like the bank.

We don't take any case that comes our way, only things that he thinks are interesting and where we're reasonably sure our client's not guilty of any wrong-doing in the case.

[That had been one of John's personal stipulations. He's... not entirely sure if that had factored into Sherlock's assessments or if things had just shaken out that way.]
