Actually, I just signed a nice book deal with a publisher, that should pay the bills for a good while.

My colleagues are usually bankrolled by Shield or their own giant corporations, some of us have to make due with autobiographies and possibly book signings.

I see secret identities are indeed passé. Don't you have any loved ones who'd be kidnapped and used against you, or some other reason to lament the pain of a secretive double life?

All my loved ones are dead.

[ He says that in a mockingly serious tone, of course. Like hell he's answering that seriously. ]

I had my identity leaked on the tabloids, you learn to lean into it after a while.

You say that like that isn't actually the fact for roughly half the town's population.

But I imagine you would. Does this kind of thing happen often, in our social media plagued society?

Yeah, it seems to be a running theme with us superhero types.

[ True fact, Matt has pointed out the problem with that particular stereotype in his comic o7 ]

You'd think it would, wouldn't you? I can't say if it's happened to anyone else on the scale it did for me, but then I was a really big name attorney with a lot of clients and enemies who were tied up in either fighting crime or doing it. You can't really toe that line on both sides and expect people not to connect the dots.

Perhaps you didn't think your career plan all the way through. And why were you not immediately arrested for vigilantism? Was it simply a matter of being able to fly or fire lasers from your fingertips?</font?

I don't buy into that too much. Anyone can do the right thing, they don't need a dark past to do it.

Well, vigilantism is kind of a thing back home. If they arrested everyone, we'd probably have supervillains taking over the city in less than a day. I got off easy and lost my license to practice in New York, but the California Bar let me practice in San Francisco.

Of course anyone can. But most people don't feel the need to do it in a latex suit under an embarrassing alias.

[To be fair this guy does do better than Batman. At least that.]

California has always been a bit of a strange place. Did you also move your superheroing business, or do you commute?

Maybe not where you're from.

Nope, moved it along with my law office. Now I catch the trolley instead of the subway on my way to fight bad guys.
