Summary: Clint finally meets Steve face to face after he revives - and also finds Ecks again. Nat and Tony catch up the next day.

108: A standard single-story house with a kitchen, living room, dining room, bathroom, and bedroom. The bed in the bedroom is a loft-style bed, giving extra space for the desk beneath it. One of the desk drawers is empty, and the others have countless small plastic cases that look like they could have been SD cards, although there aren't any computer chips in them. These are only plastic shells.

I mean we've got like... Namor, and all the Atlanteans but I never think of them as merpeople, I guess.

[ Clint settles himself against a wall. ]

Anyway yeah, that's what happened to my voice
You've never been to an ocean? Really?

[She's still not ready to really relax quite yet, still fully kitted out for travel with knotted pillowcases slung over her shoulders and all. Ecks does lean on the wall, though, in solidarity.]

I have not gone very many places yet. The ocean was miles and miles away across the Blasted Lands.

[ He grins a little. ]

Or if you can universe hop maybe you can come see ours
They're pretty huge but only some of them have merpeople

Superhero? I have heard that word before. I do not know what that means.

I think that I would rather go to a different universe than go back to mine even if I could go to the ocean and see the merpeople.

It's a lot to explain but you know how some of us have different names than our real ones? Like Hawkeye and Black Widow
We take on those names so that we can save people from bad things without having to be police, basically - a lot of us have powers.

And you can definitely come back with us and explore if you wanted
I could give you a tour of New York, it's huge

[ He actually likes the sound of that. Amazingly enough, Ecks is probably not the weirdest person people have seen in Clint's version of New York. ]

[Like Ecks -- but she doesn't say that out loud, and then she's doubly glad that she didn't because it turns out it's not really the same thing.]

Powers like magic? Why do you need different names to use powers?

Is New York your country?

Some of us have magic, yeah. We need different names so we don't get in trouble. We're not supposed to go out and do what we do cause technically it's outside the law.
Well, and people will use the people we love against us if they knew our real names

New York's a state. In a country. It's where I live right now.

[ecks]

Right now you live in Norfinbury.

[Sensitive!]

If you are saving people from bad things, why is that against the law? Is the law bad where you are from? Is it cow law?

[awwnoun]

[ Hold on. ] Cow law? What the heck is cow law?

[ecks]

It is law for cows.

[The response is rote, and she knows it's not a good explanation.]

Where I am from there is a country ruled by a god with a cow's head. That country has laws that the people I know do not follow.

[awwnoun]

We definitely don't... okay, I don't THINK we have a country ruled by a god with a cow's head.

[ He's kind of really amused by this and he's trying not to be. ]

No it's more cause what we do is outside the law. Like we're not policemen, we don't know all the laws and stuff, we just stop bad people from doing bad things, and sometimes the good guys think that's too much power for us to have.

[ecks]

You do good things, but you follow your own rules and not the laws.

I think that is like what I wanted to do when I left home, except more so.

Yep. Pretty much.

[ She got it in one! He grins at her. ] You wanna do the superhero thing back home? More so how?

[ecks]

I want to do good things that are outside the law. Or I want to not do bad things that are inside the law.

[Superhero, though? Maybe she could be one.]

[awwnoun]

I say go for it. You gonna give yourself a codename, or do you think Ecks works?

[ecks]

I think that Ecks works. I already chose my name.

[awwnoun]

Yeah. You sure did. I think that's a great superhero name. Hey, maybe you can work with the Avengers sometime, if we get to see each other again after all this.

[ecks]

[It is definitely a better superhero name (a better name, period) than Subject 437, but she does not want to share that other name even with Clint.]

As a superhero? You think that I can?

[awwnoun]

[ Grin! ] Yeah, of course. No question.

[ecks]

If we can choose where we go when we escape, I am not going home. Maybe I will go to Frisk's world, but maybe I will go to yours and be a superhero.

[awwnoun]

I'm hoping maybe we can visit everybody's. This place sucks but I like a lot of the people and I'd be sad not to see everybody again, somehow. [ But he likes the idea of Ecks coming back with them. ] Anyway. We gotta find a way out first before we think about all that.

[ecks]

[Which Andromeda only said was a way to escape back the way they came. She did not say anything about choosing. Ecks is happier to pretend, though, so she chooses not to bring that factoid up.]

I am going to unpack my things now.

[awwnoun]

Yeah. I'll do the same. We can swap stories later if you want. [ And he gives her a little salute before he shuffles back over to his things. ]
