It's an excuse for him. It's failure dressed up in kinder terms. He's certainly not going to hold everyone to the same standards that he holds himself to--that would be mad--especially when he can't even live up to those standards, himself.
Will's arguments had hit at some of those wounds, ripped them open. It's why John had snapped and snarled like an injured wolf. He's inadequate. He tries so hard to be the man that Mary and Sherlock and people like Flynn think he is, and he always lets them down.
