It can't have been taken away completely. The mako's still visible in my eyes. That means it's still present in my DNA.

[That means that whatever was done to him (and to others as well?) is only suppressing his enhancements.]

Maybe what we're looking at here is more like a Silence spell. It's cutting us off now, but it might not be permanent.

I've had the enhancements for years now. Almost half my life. Is that important?
