We are meant to work to survive. They may be attempting to keep us distracted from something more pressing - finding a mystery they don't want us to find, perhaps. Or they wish to see how we go about it - an experiment. As if there aren't enough accidental survival stories...

I'd thought at first they couldn't reach out to us more directly, but that's certainly not true.
