[ when Draco's voice comes over the network, it's clear that he's doing his best to keep his emotions reined in; there's a waver to his tone, a sort of high pitchiness that suggests he's more than a little on edge here. And really, why shouldn't he be? But if he was ever anywhere near tears in this place, he's not going to admit it to people. Especially not people he doesn't know. ]

Will someone tell me what in the hell is going on here?

[ Draco's never been that good with things he doesn't understand. It's why it's taken him something like three days before he's actually bothered to take to the tablet and the network. That and the weird goings-on this last little while.

[ He doesn't know where he is, and he doesn't know why he's here, and he's getting the gist that neither does anyone else, but they're all helping each other. And that means someone's got answers, if nothing else. He's got little to no motivation to really get to know any of them, or to help any of them in return, but if they can even give a little insight...

[ He's slowly but surely been poking around, searching things and trying to find some clue, but 2x4s and red pens don't give him much to go off of. Draco's about ready to tear his hair out. He's never really been that good at not having answers. ]

How much do you know already?

[ Mr Blunt-and-currently-on-the-move doesn't have much breath to waste on information the asker already knows. Breath or finger movement, actually. Still, he's happy to help, even if it's in a small way.

Of course, the following response probably isn't too helpful... ]

No one knows anything for sure about the bigger things.

[ text is, at least, slightly easier as far as tamping down some of his more panicked reactions to...well, everything. And while Link's response isn't helpful as of right now, it's the potential for helpfulness that has Draco actually responding. And trying not to be a dick. ]

I just got here. How much do you think? And why doesn't anyone now about the bigger things?

[ That's pretty much how Ellana felt when she arrived. And really, she still does. But she worded things a little less... angry. ]

We know very little. We're from different worlds, but we don't know who brought us here, or why. Those who have been here the longest have been here just over a fortnight.

[ There's a pause. Do weeks run the same way on other worlds? ]

Sixteen days.

[ a touch more helpful than the other option, but no less frustrating. Draco clearly doesn't look happy with that as the video clicks on, his mouth twisted into a miserable sneering line. It might not be directed at her. It actually might be more directed at the very empty building he appears to be in, his eyes flicking away from the screen for a moment as he glances around it, then back to her. ]

You're kidding. Sixteen bloody days, and no one's figured anything out?

OK.

This is Nonfinbury. No one knows how we got here. There are no animals. You have to keep moving. Not moving for more than a few days makes you sick. We have to get to shelter before the night is over or we get locked out. Death isn't permament. People come back. If someone dies, it's posted in the 'Obituries'. People come from different points in time from different worlds. Try to search every building for food or cold weather supplies. Stay warm.

[ Infodump? Infodump. Sort through the blunt sentences. ]

Not for lack of trying, I can assure you. There have been clues, but they haven't added up to anything solid yet.

[ Her lips purse and her eyes move from looking at his face on her screen, to the corner of it. Her finger moves towards it, and she taps. ]

Hold on; I'll give you what we know, but I'm still learning to use this thing correctly. I may disappear for a moment.

[ And she soon does, the screen going black, because what is opening files? What is multitasking? ~~What is life?~~ But then she does come back, less than five seconds later, her face on the screen once more. ]

There, do you see two words on the screen, written in blue and underlined?

[ He should. One says Hellschool.avi and the other is Infodump.doc. ]

[ it's a good start to everything that he needs to know, really. Though it does lead to a couple of horrified faces he's glad can't be seen. He hopes, at least; maybe this tablet-thing works against him and broadcasts the look on his face anyway. Who knows. ]

[ but then the screen goes dark, and he can't help but simply purse his mouth at it. He's getting the gist that things are definitely not Good around here, and that maybe there's no way to get home. And furthermore, does he want to go home? Well, it's better than this place, he thinks. Maybe. He hasn't been around that long.

[ Any slippage of his mood is quickly cut off by the re-appearance of this 'Lavellan' girl, and Draco straightens slightly, just on principle. He's too good to get caught out on simple things like that. And he does indeed see two words. ]

I guess other people beat me to the "this place is spooky and probably literally hell" stuff so
practical advice time.
pick a direction to travel in and stick to it until you get your bearings
you'll hit a wall eventually, that's how you know where you are
relatively speaking anyway
then you can piece things together from other people's maps so you know where important things are. like the school, which is the only place that gets food supplies daily afaik
(and yeah I mean the school in the video @Lavellan linked, have fun with that)

This is complete rubbish.

Why would anyone want to go to that place, even if it does have daily food supplies? Surely there's something else around here that's better. [ and doesn't involve a school that is apparently known as 'Hell School'. Not exactly a vote of confidence. ]

first thing you learn about this place is that nope
there's never "anything better." it's like a constantly declining state of badness
like yeah things suck at first. and you start to feel secure because you think things can't possibly get any worse and then oh no
the walls are crawling and the admin is watching you and your head feels like something is literally exploding in there

basically what I'm saying is you're going to need food and I've been here for two weeks without finding a good source that isn't that goddamn school

They'll at least bring you up to where we are as far as knowing what's been happening. You just tap the word and it will open up. One is a-- I can't remember now, but it shows the past. [ Video. She means video. ] And the other is written information in a list.

[ There's still more to learn about the tablets, but being able to find others and save information to read later seems like the two most important things, and she's caught on quickly. ]

[oh, no... another new person. She spends a while eavesdropping, and he sounds like he's not in the mood for small talk, so she decides to get to the point. Her voice sounds like a matter-of-fact and perfectly ordinary young woman's voice; there's nothing unusual about this stranger at all, Draco.]

[ He could say something about fairies from his world, but decides that's not important right now. Even he can see the vehemence in that reply. ]

What good is a place that never gets better and doesn't give us any answers? Furthermore, what good is getting dropped in the middle of nowhere and being told you have to simply wander around in hopes of finding the school, which has only one good thing going for it and that's the fact that it has food?

[ cue a tiny panic attack on the other end of texts. ]

Yes, the past. This tablet doesn't just capture what we're doing as it's happening, but can keep a record of what we're doing to show later.

I wish it was more, but at least you'll know what the rest of us do, little though it is.

Fantastic. If I'd wanted a complete headache like this, I could have simply stayed at home.
