[ He'd been pretty quiet the day before. And honestly, he might have stayed that way today as well. Hasn't been in a talking mood and that says a lot for Zack.

But admittedly, this is getting a bit frustrating and his grumping belly isn't exactly helping matters. ] so anyone know how you get into the school? I haven't found a door yet from this side. I'm on the side by that art studio if that helps any. [ There's nothing else for a while. Anything immediate just... He just doesn't want to talk about it. ]

found a photo too. the other day. don't know how much it'll help but.

[ It takes him a moment to fiddle with his tablet. Eventually-- oh, look. Video from his end although you can only see a gloved hand clutching to the photograph of a young lady in a cap and gown. It's black and white. The voice that follows is definitely that of a young adult. Male. Light if a bit clipped. ]

Got a paintbrush, too, if that's anyone's thing. I was just gonna use it for kindling otherwise. Guess you'd probably need paint, too, but... [ Not matter how sideways the thought, really, he gets wanting a distraction at this point. All too much. ]

[Al never seems to be able to find the school, though he's spoken to others who have, so he's intensely curious to see if he can spot any landmarks that might help him find it. Though that goes out of his head at the sight of the photograph.]

Is there any writing on the back or anything? I wonder who she is...

[He was just going to do voice, ended up doing video, considered flipping it back to voice, and it's- nah. He's in the middle of snowy shit so right now he's basically shivering in the middle of the majestic snow-covered shit of Nothingbury.]

[ Well, that's one way to put a face to a name real fast. At least Zack's getting adjusted to the video phone feature pretty easily. Doesn't mean he's about to show his face, himself, though. Instead, he'll flip back to voice now that he's done sharing that photo. ]

Thanks for the tip. [ Saves him from wasting anymore time than he already has trying to locate the entrance from there. All the same, that doesn't tell him-- ] So, which way do I want to head then? [ The sound of shuffling feet crunching the snow underfoot can be heard as he paces to keep warm. There's a whole lot of open space here and it's making him uneasy. If he's not careful keeping his eye on the hour, chances are high he's going to be... Yeah, he would rather not think on that too hard. ]

[And the camera dips down to the snow, because they are surrounded by snow and out comes a stick (and it should be noted that he reflexively twirls the stick like an asshole because he can and also because it's a lacrosse stick and the pointed end is easier to draw with than the basket end) and he draws a really shitty map.

Because it's in the snow.

And it's basically a square which indicates the school. Okay, there. The stick points to a rough area on the south side.]

If you're where I think you are you're here. If you continue looking on that side you'll find nothing. I wasted a few days that way.

What you want to do is head west and then north. There's a shack there. It's where I'm headed, actually. But you'd better hurry. I barely made it from there.

[ Fair enough.

But he'll keep an eye on the camera as Lancer points it down at the snow. He can catch the motion out of the corner of the angle briefly and when it stops, oh. Well, this works out pretty well. Kinda. It's a bit hard to see because it's snow ~~and your drawing skills leave much to be desired, man~~. But he gets the gist at least and that's all he needs.

There's a firm nod from his end although Lancer won't be able to see it. But Lancer'll definitely catch the cheeky tone. He'll also hear the quick crunch of snow as Zack starts west already. ] Me, hurry? I was more thinking you better pick up the pace. Or I just might end up beating you there. [ It's an idle challenge at best. If not a bit uncertain under the guise of friendly competition. He wasn't exactly planning to meet up with anyone. So many things he doesn't know about these people and whatever strength he was hoping would return hasn't. Another matter that's all too concerning.

But maybe Tadashi was right. Maybe if he hadn't been alone that other night... ]

Oh? [Drawled. He's deeply, deeply amused. Challenge accepted. On his end, the video switches to voice as well, because he's going to stow his shit and start moving.] I'd offer you a head start but I'm not going to stand around for a few hours in the snow. Sorry.

[Not that he was planning on meeting anyone, but hey, company. Company's always welcome. (And in the worst case he's got a couple of knives.)]

[ Well, that escalated quickly. Not that he's about to back down now that he's instigated it. There's a reflection of similar humor when he speaks up next. ] That's fine! Wouldn't want you going easy on me now, would I?

[ Not that he's going to make this into some kind of sprinting match. He's elated to give himself some reason to be on the going than the simple matter of survival, but he's got enough sense to pace himself by now.

He's also got a knife of his own for a reason. He just hopes it doesn't have to come to that. ]

[Well...no, let's be real, there's probably no real reason for them to end up stabbing each other in the darkness barring some kind of mind control or a beast shows up out of nowhere and one of them accidentally shanks the other in the semi-darkness in a tragic act.

The former's happened a few times, but fortunately there's a lack of shambling beasts in the shadows. So fortunately, they'll probably be okay.]

I'd say I'd have a fire going but the shed's pretty small. There's a cafeteria in the school. I'll show you where it is tomorrow.

[Well, assuming Zack doesn't take levels in dickbaggery and go, "No, never."]

[ ..They'll just have to hope nothing like that other night decides to happen again. He prefers not to injure or kill anyone, okay.

That grin in his tone has yet to fade although he sounds milder. His tone just a hint more easy-going than before. ]

Sounds good! [ A beat before he seems to catch the rest of that (hey, you can't blame a guy for being pumped to hear about a place that finally has food.) ] And hey! That's if you get there before me! Who knows? I might be clearing a space and burning Wicked Little Secrets by the time you get there! [ Gaia knows what else he'll use this bad romance novel for otherwise. ]

[You can hear a pause. You can hear the moment in which he processes that. Thinks about it. Slows a bit. And then...]

Wicked Little Secrets? Sounds...interesting. [In the, "Congrats, Zack, why don't you share this with the entire damn network." sort of way.]

[ Judge all you want, Lancer. He's pretty damned devil may care about sharing. Not like he's implying that he's reading it which also means he has no problem being nonchalant with his next comment. ]

Oh? I could save it for you if you really wanna read it that much. [ Almost. ...Yeah, there's definitely another grin there, all teeth. ]

We could do a dramatic reading over the network. [God no, he's not serious. Stomping through the snow resumes.]

Give people a way to pass the time that isn't just asking questions about where things are or talking about how cold it is outside. Of course, we'd probably get yelled at by some people I know...

Be careful in the school. You can't fight the things there but they can hurt you.

[ He might as well just stick to audio. Everyone already heard him anyway. ]

That's what I've heard. But-- hey, what do you mean you can't fight them? [ How can something do that? Unless it's like those Pumpkins, but.. He's yet to see anything familiar like that. ]

They're not touchable.

[ Tangible would have been a better word, but he's Link, not Zelda.

After a while, an audio feed opens up. ]

Just get away from them if you see them.

Heh! [ Lancer might not be serious, but that doesn't stop Zack from being at least slightly tempted to make it a real thing. ]

So, how'd we wanna split it up? You read one page, I read the next? Or would we do it from chapter to chapter? [ That tease in his voice continues past his purposeful march. ]

Not "touchable", huh? [ He echoes the awkward wording, but he gets the gist and nods though not without a frown in his voice. ] How fast are they? Can they go through walls?

[ He might know monsters back home, but this is new turf. The more he knows, the better chances he'll survive. ]

Fast as a person. Didn't see them go through walls. [ Link's voice is as abrupt as his text, but he's not unfriendly. He wants to help the people who go in there too. Food is important, so it's definitely worth it in his mind. ] It's dark, so they hide well. Be careful.

[ He shrugs a bit at that. ] Guess it can't be any different from dealing with a monster. [ You know. Those... really bad ones that you're better off avoiding if you can help it. He's had to dodge a few of those before in the last year. And back then, it had been with someone in tow. Now, he... Well. It's not like he would wish this place on anyone.

There's another pause before he seems to decide on something. ] Do I wanna know what they do if they catch you? [ It's half a joke. Half dead serious. If he does get caught, better off to know what he's going to have to fight to tolerate. ]

Chapter to chapter. That way, the other guy can deal with the network while we read. [Clearly the most tactical solution.] I'm sure our friends elsewhere would have a few requests for us.

[ Link shrugs and gives a nod at his first assesment. It's not that different from sneaking past other monsters. The only trouble with that is that he had always been able to fight the monsters if they caught sight of him. It was worth knowing that you couldn't battle these ones.

As for the other question... ]

Lea said something about face ripping.

[ He says it flatly, bluntly, as if he's talking about getting a bad grade. The effect might be a bit humourous. ]

Hey, if we got really good at it, they might even wanna join us! Maybe we could fill roles or something. Have auditions! [ Okay, he wouldn't go that far. But saying ridiculous things like this at least helps him forget how numbly cold he's feeling out in the snow.

...Yeah, more than likely, they're going to kill them by the end of a stunt like that. ]

[ That makes two of them there. Zack wasn't exactly great at stealth missions back in the day either. But from recent experience, he's at least gotten better. ...Would still prefer to just take them out though. Less to worry about. You know. Like them jumping him later.

...And that just gets him to pause. Well, this one's certainly matter of fact. It's almost comical if not for the fact that it's... not exactly comforting to know. ] So, they basically... eat your face. [ Well then. ] Great. I'll be right at home. [ Just a bit of sassy sarcasm right there. ]

[ Link doesn't smile much, but Zack's comment gets a small one out of them. It colours his voice very slightly as he speaks. ]

You too?

There's been talk of getting the town to work together. So why not this? We could do this while trying to chip a hole through the walls and escape. It'll keep morale up, too.
