Before you make any alterations to it, the tablet's assistant is an eye.

Within our first month here, something appeared to all of us. It wasn't an eye, exactly, but its sole purpose seemed to be to see - everything. It saw the worst of all of us, and tormented us with it. Some of us escaped it by turning on the beacon, which was made available for the first time.

A beacon is light, often represented as a lighthouse.
Though the symbol for a beacon can also resemble an eye depending on how it's drawn.
It seems eyes are important nevertheless.

We should ask someone native to here, if we have the chance again. Surely the assistant's shape is not unique to our situation, at the very least, and it seems these tablets were ubiquitous among the original population.

[Or at least, he hopes so. If the assistant had no default form for the original residents, he doesn't know what he's going to do about it.]

There are a handful of the original residents in spirit form, from time to time. I doubt they would appear on command, but should we encounter them again, they might be able to help.

A woman named Shelley, in particular, might be of the most help. She was involved in the creation of these tablets, as I recall. Or perhaps it was this network, rather than the tablets. So much has happened since I learned of it.

Have you heard or seen anything from Shelley that could be of use?

[He may even be entirely wrong on both fronts, who even knows, with all the pain, panic, and loss packed into such a short time - his mind deals with burdens like this by letting time blend into itself, so it's harder to tell exactly how long he's been suffering. It's an immortality thing, probably.]

Not for some time. You might get some results by asking about those who dreamed about her and the other former residents, when our dreams were shared. I didn't experience those dreams, myself. Quark was the one to host her spirit when the spirits first made their presence known, so he may know more.
